Police: Woman hanged pit bull in tree

TEXAS CITY, Texas -- A Texas City woman is in the Galveston County jail accused of hanging her pit bull in a tree until it was dead. Tiffany Hegwood, 32, is charged with animal cruelty.

Texas City police said the woman was arrested Monday after her dog allegedly attacked some kids.

Police said Hegwood feared that after her dog injured a 2-year-old girl, it would be euthanized. So, she strung it up by its neck and hanged the dog in a nearby tree.

The attack on the child was not severe said officials.

Police said the incident occurred Monday afternoon when three kids were taking trash to the dumpster at the Memorial Oaks Apartments when a put bull rushed them and knocked the children to the ground. An apartment manager called police when she saw the supposed attack.

The 2-year-old was taken to a local hospital, while the other two children – ages 3 and 10 – suffered bruises and scratches said authorities.

Police allege Hegwood then hanged her dog after animal control officers said they would likely have to quarantine the animal for a rabies observation after the attack.

.. unfortunately pitbulls ending up in the wrong hands suffer the worst ....... it makes me so angry!; the ignorance of some people who apt to get a pitbull without any knowledge of the breed..... the poor dog as most pitbulls would do was acting clumsy, knocking the children down , therefore a misunderstanding ensues that the dog attacked!.. now why was the dog unconfined, behind a fence etc as all pitbulls should be for their own safety as well ..... I hope the judge throws the maximum at this woman....
