I'm attempting to compile numbers on the breed, and this thread will continually be updated as I gather information:
*The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that up to 20 percent of the country’s sheltered dogs are pit bulls.
* In 2006, animal shelters reported 29 percent of all dogs (3,521) entered into East Bay shelters were pit bulls or pit bull mixes. That same year, about half of all dogs euthanized from the area were from that breed - according to Eliza Fried of the East Bay SPCA.
*Pit bulls and pit bull mixes in 2007 accounted for more than 20 percent of the dogs taken to the Regional Center for Animal Control and Protection, which covers Roanoke, Roanoke County, Botetourt County and Vinton. 66 percent of pits were euthanized, compared with 44 percent of all dogs, and 12 percent were adopted, compared with 25 percent of all dogs. The rest were returned to their owners.
*Pit bulls make up half the animals that find their way to the Oakland animal shelter, and two-thirds of those are euthanized, shelter officials say.
*The pit bull population has now risen to 40% of all the dogs in 12 shelters in Los Angeles. THAT MEANS THAT ALMOST HALF OF THE ENTIRE LOS ANGELES DOG POPULATION IS PITS OR PIT MIXES! Most are strays, tossed out like dirty laundry. It's heartbreaking. (Villalobos Rescue Center regarding the situation in Los Angeles, CA.)
*Of the 8,159 dogs at the Knoxville Young-Williams animal shelter in 2007, 1,305 were pit bulls (about 16%). Of 1,441 dogs adopted, 38 were classified as pit bulls, though Adams said most almost certainly were mixed breeds. (Tim Adams, director of the Knoxville-Knox County Young-Williams Animal Center)
*In 2007, more pit bulls were euthanized at the Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement Office shelter than any other breed of dog. About 80 percent of the 665 pit bulls that came into the shelter were put down, said shelter Director Steve Lawrence.
*An estimated 35 percent of the nation’s animal shelters take in at least one pit bull per day, according to a 2000 study by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. That study also found that pit bulls make up 20 percent of the population in one out of four animal shelters nationwide.
*It is estimated that one in four dogs at the Kern County (CA) Animal Shelter is a pit bull.
*8/09 - Hundreds of pit bulls pour into Metro Nashville's animal control every month. It's estimated these dogs make up 60 percent of the animals they take in monthly.
