From CHAKO:
THIS IS LONG BUT PLEASE READ IT ALL AND FORWARD.... A CHILD'S FAMILY LIFE MAY BE AT STAKE!
UC Davis "Distinguished Professor Emeritus" of the University of California Davis believes PIT BULLS are DANGEROUS dogs. He has agreed to act as an expert witness in the persecution of a family who owns a NEUTERED, loving family pet that happens to be PART Pit Bull and was adopted from a shelter! He believes that the CHILD in the family may be in DANGER just because the family owns a dog that might be part Pit Bull. He states, "the style of biting by Pit Bulls contrasts with that of dogs of other breeds that may be predisposed to deliver a 'warning' snap when pestered or when a preferred food is taken away. What undoubtedly mostly concerns parents of chlidren when they learn of the possibility of intimate exposure of their children to a Pit Bull is not a warning snap but the POSSIBILITY OF A VERY SERIOUS OR FATAL ATTACK." (caps added)
He also claims that because this family adopted its Pit Bull mix from the SPCA, it might be aggressive because "many dogs are surrendered to shelters because of aggresssive behavior.... Without any information to the contrary, an arguable assumption...is that previous signs of aggression played at least some role in the surrender of thos dog to the SPCA"
THAT'S RIGHT! Rescue/Shelter dogs are time-bombs waiting to explode b/c most of them were probably surrendered because they're aggressive, and shelters are just adopting out dangerous dogs left and right!
This is a SLAP IN THE FACE to shelters and rescues EVERYWHERE, regardless of the breeds of dogs they release.
His idea that a child in a house is in danger JUST b/c the family owns a dog that looks part Pit Bull is blatant discrimination. is this child in danger of being taken away from his family just b/c his parents adopted a shelter dog?!
BENJAMIN HART's comments seem to be in direct conflict with UC Davis' own PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY, which state
"The University of California, Davis, is first and foremost an institution of learning and teaching, committed to serving the needs of society. Our campus community reflects and is a part of a society comprising all races, creeds and social circumstances. The successful conduct of the university's affairs requires that every member of the university community acknowledge and practice the following basic principles:
We affirm the inherent dignity in all of us, and we strive to maintain a climate of justice marked by respect for each other. We acknowledge that our society carries within it historical and deep-rooted misunderstandings and biases, and therefore we will endeavor to foster mutual understanding among the many parts of our whole.
We affirm the right of freedom of expression within our community and affirm our commitment to the highest standards of civility and decency towards all. We recognize the right of every individual to think and speak as dictated by personal belief, to express any idea, and to disagree with or counter another's point of view, limited only by university regulations governing time, place and manner. We promote open expression of our individuality and our diversity within the bounds of courtesy, sensitivity and respect.
We confront and reject all manifestations of discrimination, including those based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, religious or political beliefs, status within or outside the university, or any of the other differences among people which have been excuses for misunderstanding, dissension or hatred. We recognize and cherish the richness contributed to our lives by our diversity. We take pride in our various achievements, and we celebrate our differences.
We recognize that each of us has an obligation to the community of which we have chosen to be a part. We will strive to build a true community of spirit and purpose based on mutual respect and caring."
OBVIOUSLY, HART doesn't respect Pit Bull owners. He doesn't respect the shelter or rescue community. He embraces discrimination (note the Principles of Community reject ALL manifestations of discrimination!") He doesn't celebrate differences. He views Pit Bulls as dangerous time bombs and obviously thinks any parent that adopts a dog from a shelter or has a dog that looks part Pit Bull is a negligent parent!
Professor HART doesn't even realize there is a Pit Bull service dog at UC Davis that participated in UC Davis' own Disabilities Awareness Week just a few months ago! Is UC Davis allowing a DANGEROUS dog to interact with the UC Davis community on a daily basis?
HART's comments are also offensive to people who own Pit Bull service dogs -- including those within the UC Davis community. If HART were to sit on a hiring panel to interview someone who had a Pit Bull service dog -- would he HIRE them? Would that person with a disability even apply for the job knowing HART thinks Pit Bulls are dangerous dogs?
HART's web page puts him with UC Davis' school of veterinary medicine. Would you want to take YOUR dog to a veterinary clinic that has people like DR. Hart who harbors such hate against a particular breed?
I wouldn't!
