Or just stupidity? NJ residents will recognize the name Sharpe James, ex-long time mayor of Newark who repeatedly attempted to ban Pit Bulls. Now he is facing up to 20 years in prison, for fraud among other things. When I heard this news I couldn't help smiling a bit. ;D dailynewarker.com/2008/04/16/sharpe-james-found-guilty/

Oh my god I was coming here to post this!!! I can't hope but help that this will attatch some "stigma" to proposing breed bans. NJ has seemed like a relative safe haven for us, with anti-BSL legislation in the constitution (and towns being successfully sued for trying it), but Sharpe James has TWICE preyed on our breed. Most of his "proposals" included HEAVY monitary fines for owning pit bulls. Since pits and pit mixes are highly popular (with no indication of that changing!), and since the bill was unclear on how to define a dog as a pit bull type, this would have meant LOADS of revenue for whoever would have been incharge of such an assinine program. I am sure James, who has let Newark slip into more and more deadly gang/drug warfare in his "reign", was primarily concerned with this new source of revenue! Thank GOD he was twice struck down, and thank GOD that he has been exposed as a fraud and a crook! Now if anyone tries this again, we can associate them with Sharpe James (hey two can play politics!) A GREAT day for NJ PIT BULLS!!!!
