So I was walking Chubs yesterday, and he was being more rambuctious. I put him in a down stay, put him used poop bag on the floor next to him so I can pull out some treats and the next thing I know I see a kid walking towards us kicking a soccer ball. Now Chubs has the ball in his sights. I started giving him lots of treats (which he took) as per what I've been reading in the Control Unleashed book. The kid came within two feet of us with that ball and I had to grab Chubby's collar because he WANTED that ball! No lunging, just trying to wiggle away to get that ball, I mention to the kid "oh, he really wants your ball" so that he understands its not like my dog want to kill him...he wants to kill his ball. Kid keeps walking away and Chubs is now in a super aroused state and wants a ball, any ball or something at this point. So he redirects all his frustration to the closest thing to him...his little round bag of poop!!
He clamps down and out it comes...grooooooooss!!! He right away drops it and tries to spit it out. I just looked at him and said "See. Now what did you learn?" He just looked at me confused and unhappy.
Had to brush his teeth it get the smell of poop off his breath. Bleh.

HAHAHA oh boy. Well, ya know, sometimes the plain ol' environment teaches the dogs better than we can. Maybe you won't have a problem with him redirecting after this. I am sure the taste of his own poop was NOT pleasant! ROFL

ewwwww. as far as him getting all excited thats cause you allowed him to be, if you read the other book too it says to start at a distance far away and slowly over weeks decrease the distance.. same with control unleashed, work with him far away, and once his focus is 100% down then you move a hair closer, repeat, once focus is 100% then again move a hair closer..

I did read that part ME, but this kid came out of nowhere (probably a close by alley I guess) and was kicking his ball. I've been working on the distance thing but this is a case where life intervened. Normally he wouldn't pay attention to the treats I offer him in these kinds of situations. But yesterday he actually took treats from my hand and if I dropped some on the ground he would eat them, instead of intently staring at the ball 100%. I'm still working on it, but like I've said before my neighborhood is full of kids playing basketball or soccer and they bounce/kick their balls home or down the block. I get dizzy from our walks sometimes with all the random 'about-face' we have to do so Chubs isn't confronted with his trigger head on.

i would now try liverwurst, and see if that works better. its hard when people come out of nowhere , it throws a wrench in the training. the redirecting is not good that meant he was past the frustration level.. if you up the treats to something he really drools and goes nuts over more then a ball that should help too...

Ha ha Nastay! First I want to say good for you getting that book. Second I agree with Maryellen allthough I realize that sometimes people and dogs come out of no where and I hate when that happens. The best thing would get a willing soul to play with a ball at the distance. Someone who is willing to do this often.
