My boyfriend went to an event the other night and another couple brought their dog, a young male boxer. My bf noticed that he was wearing a shock collar, and was obviously not impressed. He started playing with the dog and when the owners weren't looking he took the collar off and threw it away. Not that I necessarily agree with the method, but hopefully they'll think twice before buying another one.

haha.
I had 2 dogs come into my work for daycare with shock collars on and they handed us the remotes. I wanted to throw them out so bad, your bf has guts.

Hehehe that is funny..... I have a friend that uses them on her field dogs to keep them close when out at work. But other than that, I totally disagree. I tried it on myself OUCH!

The trainer at the animal shelter here has her litte remotes attached to her belt. I hate when I see her all ready to shock some poor doggie.

Shock collars are barbaric. What's even worse, is that proponents use misleading tactics to get the public to buy into the notion that electric shock is actually a viable and even great every day way to train a dog.

^ Agreed. I don't know why some people think that pain or anything negative will bring positive behaviour.
Just to clarify, when I meant that I don't necessarily agree with destroying someone else's property. I completely, 100% disagree with the use of shock collars.

Blah blah blah Just another pro-shock advocate looking for every excuse in the book to keep doing what they are doing. If the author of that article doesn't like the study they are referring to, they can just look at the gazillions of other research that show how damaging punishment and aversives are to the animals who must endure them. BTW, I support a ban on shock collars for the US. (This is one of the very few times you will ever hear me say I support a ban on anything.)

I support lots of bans: on wearing pants that hang down to the floor, working on Fridays, working on Mondays, telling me your dog knows the difference between Evian and Poland Spring...
But shock collar is def. up high on the list of for real stuff that should be banned.
