COALITION OF ADVOCATES TO HOST VIGIL ON JUNE 17 FOR VICTIM OF ANIMAL CRUELTY
Community advocates from the fields of animal welfare, aging, law enforcement, education, social services, and City Council are hosting a vigil on Thursday, June 17, to honor of the 1-year-old puppy named Flora, a victim of animal cruelty who was killed in Barrett Playground (in Olney) on June 15. Hundreds of attendees from the Delaware Valley Region are expected, along with their dogs. The vigil will take place at Barrett Playground (8th & Duncannon Streets) from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM.
The goal is to send a powerful message to the City of Philadelphia: violence against any living being will not be tolerated. Mounting evidence demonstrates the link between animal cruelty and serious crimes of more narrowly human concern, including homicide, spousal and child abuse, rape, drugs, and illegal firearms.
At least 88% of families under state supervision for child abuse and at least 50% of those involved in school shootings have a history of animal abuse. Speakers at the vigil will include:

· Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals CEO Susan Cosby
· Humane Society of the United States Coordinator for “End Dogfighting Philadelphia” Rebecca Glenn-Dinwoodie
· Philadelphia Adult Protective Services Supervisor Jennifer Spoeri
· Need in Deed Program Manager Monica Lyons-Jones
· Social Worker/2010 Philadelphia Humane Educator of the Year Kim Wolf
During the vigil a memorial will be constructed at the playground – with flowers, dog toys, candles, and cards – to honor Flora’s life and to create a visual reminder that violence will not be tolerated. Attendees will also be canvassing the neighborhood with flyers asking for information on this crime. Philadelphia Public School students who worked with Need in Deed (www.needindeed.org) during the 2009-2010 school year will be distributing bilingual brochures they created on the link between animal abuse and child abuse.
The Humane Society of the United States and the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are offering a $3,500 reward for information leading to the conviction of the person(s) responsible.
