I recently adopted a puppy. He is 11 weeks old and we are having a very difficult time with the potty training. I feed on a regular schedule, I take him outside about every half hour and make sure he does his business. I use lots of praise when he goes outside. He will go outside, then 5 minutes later pee in the house. Is this normal for a puppy? I am looking for anyone with experience on this issue and I am open to any help/suggestions! Thanks so much!

Make sure you use those special urine cleaning products whereever he pees in the house. It made a world of difference when I had to potty train both my adult adopted dogs. Even if you can't smell it, the dog still can and it reminds him this is his 'pee spot'. Also, he's very young so it may take a while since he still probably can't hold it in very long. How long have you guys been trying?

Also, try giving him a treat right on the pee spot (after you've cleaned it up, or else that's gross!). Dogs will not soil where they eat. So by feeding him on a former spot, he might get the hint that peeing there is not OK. Maybe try using a clicker whenever he pees outside. It wouldn't be a bad idea to start using it early!
Hope it works out for you! Luckily my dogs all came potty trained. Those that needed reminders just needed some treats when they went outside. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

an 11 week old pup wont be housebroken until MUCH older.... his bladder is tiny right now, so he can only hold it for a little bit.. stay outside with him and make sure he completely pees/poops , treat/praise outside for it, and instead of rushing back inside, play with him outside for a bit just in case he has to go again. puppies are nothing but peeing/pooping machines until they hit around 6 months, then they get better control of their bladder at that age.. remember pups need to potty immediately after waking up, eating, drinking, playing,napping- so take him out every hour and praise right after he potties outside and stay out for a bit before you go back in.. he will get it eventually dont worry

Just as Maryellen said it's going to take a while for your pup to be potty trained. I can actually relate since I have 2 pups (9 months and 7 months old) and up until about a month ago we were still working on potty training. We still have accidents here and there if anything interrupts the schedule but not nearly as often. Just stay patient and praise for outside, he'll get it.

Thanks so much everyone! Glad to know that it just takes a while and that what I am doing is heading the right direction. I am using praise, treats, lots of trips outside, and outside playtime. I think he will get it eventually....but thanks for the tips!
