Has anyone used this with success? I have an 18 month rescue, and he pulls me so much when we walk that he puts me in tears. I almost was going to trade him for a pup, but he's such a good dog in every other way that I just couldn't let him go. Besides everyone goes after the puppies, and nobody wants the older dogs.

I am not a big fan of the gentle leader. If your dog is pulling I would suggest the sensation harness.

I avoid Gentle Leaders unless the dog is very strong and a bad puller, and/or aggressive. The Sensation Harness is very good. But it's another tool like anything else that has to be fit properly, the dog taught how to respond to it properly, and is merely an aid in training, not the fix in and of itself. Here is the thread on head collars (Gentle Leaders) that you might find helpful: therealpitbull.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=moldmanagethepitbullmind&action=display&thread=87

The SPCA had me buy a gentle leader from the mobile vet that parked intheir parking lot, the woman came out sized him and walked him around the driveway- she was nice enough but she never once had me walk with it or try to feel how it works, now at home I can't get the damn thing how she had it! lol It's very inconvienient, not easy to use and he hides. I don't want to put him through something that makes him cower and believe me by the time I give up we've both had enough. It was a waste of money. It also looks too much like a muzzle, people in the parking lot steered clear because it looked as though the dog was being restrained- it just made him look mean and his unhappiness in wearing it didn't help!!! It has been a wk today since he came home with us, he hasn't been on a leash since- we live in the country he has picked up quickly on the allowed boundaries and plays supervised in and out doors, he rides in the car, etc...is the leash something I should be working on, on adoption day he drug me all over he is so strong for a little cuddly guy

Yes you should work on the leash. I live in country too but enjoy walks with my dog. I use the sensation or sensible harness. www.softouchconcepts.com/ If you call them they will help you size the dog and they can customize it too. You can buy it direct from the company and they will re size it if your dog grows for only 5.00, after Rocky was 2 or 3 his chest expanded something I had to do was add more to the chest area only. I will also plan to give this other harness a try someone in my town owns this pet store in the mall and she was at a street sale trying to sell these. usadogshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=28 I was asked to give it a try and walk up and down the street show it off. I liked it except for the special leash that goes with it was an added expense. I also liked the fur material on the chest part since Rocky has hardly any hair on his chest he will get all red from his harness. However I have added mole skin to the part under his pits so should add some to the front of the harness too this has really helped with the rubbing. The sensible and sensation harness does not stop them from pulling but does take the power out of the pull making it easier for you to work the dog. I was successful with using good treats to keep dog focused on me. Rocky can still try to pull at times but when I stop walking he comes back to me. I can also walk him on a martingale but if he pulls he can pull hard easier for me to handle with my weak back with him on the harness. I tried the head harness and found it worse so I returned it. Therefore I highly recommend you order a sensation or sensible harness. My training class allowed for use of the sensation harness which was nice but I also continued to work him with the martingale for 2 reasons. In order to pass Canine good CItizen you cant use this type of harness but you can use martingale. To pass American Temperament Test same thing and Therapy Dog International All of which ROcky has passed even though he can pull he has learned that when he is working he is not to pull. It does take a long time to have success but if you set a schedule of working and walking you will get there. And when you get there dont stop or you will get set back. Trust me. I have also tried sporne harness. Its alright but it has caused sores on Rocky's chest so I only use it for emergency like if I cant find his harness. Gentle leader also makes a harness similar to sensation that clips on chest. It also was ok until Rocky's chest expanded just does not fit him right. I use it to walk a shelter dog that pulls like hell on a slip lead choking herself to death. Worked wonders like a different dog, until some fool hung it on the shelter dogs kennel and she chewed it. She was a perfect example of the difference. She just cant pull with her chest like she can with her neck. BTW Rocky runs away every time I pull the harness out. Sometimes I have to get a treat out. He has been wearing it for years but still runs and hides under dining room table. Now it could be because he is super smart and remembers everything and once I did accidentally pinch on his belly when clipping it on. But it has become a routine now. He is excited to go for walk but soon as harness comes out he starts running around I get out a treat and he runs too me and puts his body in get harness on position. Maybe he is just playing me for a treat! Which is very likely.

I use the sensation harness and love it....just make sure you clip the leash to the collar and the harness (harness has a front clip) You can also try a martingale if you want.

I have since bought a sensation harness from puplife.com.... Tyson took to it instantly, it appears to be comfortable, it is easy to fit and put on and take off....I have his full cooperation when I bring it out.....I returned the gentle lead....we both hated that thing...
