Does anyone have any thoughts on her training style and methods (It's Me Or The Dog - Animal Planet)? I've caught a few episodes of her show and was just curious if anyone had any thoughts about it.
I thought she had some pretty good methods, especially for a dog with trust issues. Ellie has terrible trust issues stemming from an abusive previous owner. Victoria's idea (as seen on one episode of her show) was to have a treat ball or a special toy, kept near the door and out of the dog's reach that they are only allowed to have when friends or family come over. You give the toy or treat to the visitor and they are to give it to the dog once they are fully inside the house. I guess it teaches the dog that if Mom or Dad let the visitor in the house, they are good and come bearing treats. We haven't tried this yet with Ellie, so any thoughts (pros or cons) on this would be great!

I really enjoy watching this show. She is not hard handed with the dogs but uses positive and taking away attention when unwanted behaviors occur. She also really seems to understand that dogs are really part of the family. I get such a different "vibe" from her methods than from Caesar's. I much prefer methods like those she uses.

I've only seen an episode or two, but I've also heard bits and pieces from others about how she trains and I think she is a really good step in the right direction as far as training shows go. She uses a lot of positive reinforcement and some negative punishment - which essentially means she takes away something a dog wants when they misbehave.
The method described above is classical conditioning, in that the dog learns A = B, and it can be a very good way to help a dog overcome fear. When the scary thing becomes an indicator that something really good happens, the dog begins to 'lighten up'.

I only saw one episode myself, but if it was the show I'm thinking of I'll never forget it. This couple had a dog with seperation anxiety and whenever they'd go out it would open the fridge, take out ALL the food, open all the containers, and eat it all.
They rigged the house with cameras including one in the fridge itself. You felt really bad for the dog but I admit watching a dog open the fridge with its mouth then systematically take out everything and eat it was just hilarious. He even opened the drawers and things from what I recall.
She seemed to have the dog well on its way to recovery by the end of the show, but its TV so you never know I guess.
