Steve Helmer’s vision to promote awareness for the pit bull, the most discriminated breed, has come to fruition. This event will prove to be the largest benefit for the pit bull in the history of the metroplex. Steve is a very modest, statuesque man who is quite adamant about keeping the focus away from himself and Black Eye Media and strictly on the pit bull. However, in essence, without his vision and tireless effort, In the Pit for the Pit would not be taking place. The event entitled In the Pit for the Pit will be held in Dallas, Texas on November 12-14, 2010 at O’Rileys. A total of 36 bands will be performing. Other scheduled guests include Mick James from New York, and some cast members from the show “Pit Bulls & Parolees”. Each band will play solely for the benefit and dedication to the pit bull.
All the while, his faithful companion, Ace, has been right by his side. After all, it was Ace that fueled Steve’s passion to bring forth a benefit of this magnitude, 36 bands playing over a period of three days. By the way, Ace is Steve’s handsome pit bull and the poster dog for the intelligence and gentleness that pit bulls possess. He also has one black eye, the perfect mascot for Black Eye Media. One of the most fascinating facts about Steve and this benefit is that he brought it to life with a zero budget. In Steve’s words “The bottom line is, much of the reason that I do all that I do is because my own Pit Bull won me over with love and loyalty. I could never put a price on the comfort he has brought me in the hardest times of life.”
Steve Helmer is a musician of 39 years and President of Black Eye Media. Black Eye Media came into existence soon after he wrote the song “Black Eye.” The song was written about how people tend to look upon the negative and envision ‘black’. He readily admits that before he was fortunate enough to enlist the companionship of a pit bull, he was scared of them, due largely to the negative media hype projected toward the pit bull. Ace changed all of that and he has seen why the pit bull is referred to as the “nurse maid” dog. It possesses a gentle nature to readily comfort and console all, especially children. Petey from the Little Rascals is a great example of the easygoing nature of the pit bull.
Steve credits Lindsay Thompson, General Manager of Black Eye Media; Hayden Arban of Blueprimate.com; Starla Biage; and Wornstar Clothing. Steve and I share the same passion for the pit bull, so the opportunity to interview Steve was truly an honor. Steve’s drive and passion is contagious. He aims to inform the public about the pit bull and the unjust discrimination that this breed suffers.
In the Pit for the Pit has been a work in progress for some time. Once Steve obtained approval from the producer of Animal Planet’s Pit Bulls and Parolees, Steve began working tirelessly. Steve wanted to emphasize that the sacrifices he encountered were nothing in comparison to the number of pit bulls who are needlessly put to death in shelters due to ignorance, through neglect and abuse, as well as at the hands of fighters. In the Pit for the Pit proceeds will benefit the Villalobos Pit Bull Rescue Center exclusively, the largest pit bull rescue in the nation, which is owned and operated by Tia Torres. Ms. Torres enlists parolees to work with and train the rescued pit bulls so they can then be placed in loving homes. She is the star of the show “Pit Bulls and Parolees”. Steve made a great point . . . “Pit bulls, Parolees and Metal music lovers, all three are judged for being ‘bad’ or ‘evil’. Simply not true!” Again, such stereotypes are based upon ignorance and only negative, mostly damning information fed by the media to unassuming individuals. Steve and Ace are out to change these stereotypes.
The pit bull has been singled out and in many cities, Breed Specific Legislation has been enacted. Such laws punish the breed and not the criminal act. The pit bull suffers at the hands of thugs and criminals such as Michael Vick. According to Linda S. Weiss of the Michigan State University College of Law, in 1984, a New Mexico town completely banned pit bulls and allowed county officers to confiscate and kill the dogs. That very same year, Cincinnati, Ohio enacted a similar regulation that included all pit bull terriers (http://www.animallaw.info/articles/aruslweiss2001.htm). Some insurers in the State of Texas have denied insurance to homeowners due to the fact that they owned a Pit Bull, Rottweiler, or Doberman Pinscher. This is something that all citizens need to take note of and put an end to immediately. It is time to open our eyes to the unjust discrimination against the pit bull and speak out. In the Pit for the Pit is the chance to show our support for this breed.
Steve Helmer, President of Black Eye Media, is a shining example of a professional utilizing his skills and expertise to benefit animals, specifically the pit bull. I hope that this article has proven that no matter what your experience is with pit bulls, you can make a difference in the lives of these animals. As Steve stated “It's about encouraging those people that there is strength in numbers, and together as a unit, we can make a difference for all the Pit Bulls in this world.” Ticket information as well as event details can be located by accessing the following website: www.blackeyemediaofficial.com or blackeyepresents.eventbrite.com. A very special thank you to Steve, Ace and all of the metal bands for putting on this spectacular event to benefit the pit bull.
