So i've been reading about a lot of these positive training methods but I haven't quite found anything for my specific problem.
Every dog to some extent I think likes to do things on his own terms. Mine..seems particularly so.
IE: When I first started training him to walk on a leash..he pulled and pulled and pulled some more. The yank back technique never budged him..though i'll admit I didn't try for longer than a few walks because it's cant be to great for him. I put him in a harness and actually it did help a little..he certainly doesn't strain as much in it. But what he works best in ..is nothing. If i'm outside or at my barn, and ask him to heel...he acts like he's been doing it for years and stays right where he should..it's like putting a leash makes him defiant.
IE: If he's off leash somewhere where there are distractions, his attention is only on me AFTER he's had a good run or is tired. It's like he's got doggy ADD...you have to exhaust him to get his mind to slow down. I've read to start adding distractions slowly..at home he can sit stay lay down stay yadda yadda. When we go out....nope...started with quiet parks..walks around the block..heck even just going in the back yard. I tried treats..which work for about 3 seconds and then he becomes so focused on the treat (if its actually one he'll eat) it's like he tunes me out and I have to go back to square one. I've been thinking clicker training maybe? I'm just kind of running out of ideas. I mean these are just SOME of what he does. He's a good boy he just has SO much energy that he's always busy busy busy and if something takes his attention away from me...if i'm not yelling to call him back...or bribeing him...I don't get results. He just tunes out!
Adderol for dogs maybe? JUST KIDDING Any advice would be appreciated!
