Hi, My name is Sheila. I live in Northern California but am originally from New Jersey.
I volunteer my weekends at the Sacramento County Animal Care and Regulation (aka. Animal Control). I met very few peoples until I started working there. We have all sorts of animals, but as far as dogs go, we are overrun with pitties and chihuahuas.
Prior to working at the shelter I was afraid of pit bulls due to the negative publicity they receive. After working at the shelter for over a year, they are probably my all around favorite types of dogs. I love the AmStaffs, but I've really fallen for the really big American Bulldogs.
My 16.5 year old lab mix, Molly, died about 3 years ago, and I was looking for another dog to share my home. I had fallen for three different pitbulls. One sort of got adopted out from under me, and the other two were cat aggressive, which wasn't going to work in my home. I found a 1.2 year old black lab and she was a very good fit. I adopted her in April and I am just gaga about her. I've named her Chelsea.
I do believe that my next dog will be a pit. And now that I'm more tuned into the breed, and I watch all of the Animal Planet shows about pitties, and being exposed to so many at the shelter, I know for certain my pittie will be a rescue.

Hi Sheila. Welcome to the forum! Glad that your perception of pit bulls has changed from the positive experiences you have had with them!

Hi Sheila, good to have you here! I think you'll find that lots of people got involved with the breed under similar circumstances.

I was at a party last night and eventually the two year old female pitty made an entrance, unexpectedly. She was gorgeous and friendly. I wanted her to stay but her mamma thought it best to put her back in hiding. But first I had to rub her belly.

Welcome to the forum, Sheila! I love stories like yours - when people who were previously intimidated by the breed become pit bull lovers and advocates after just spending some time getting to know them. And thank you for the volunteer work you're doing. Rescues and shelters definitely depend on volunteers!

Update: About 4 months ago this sweet female pit killed the family's 12 year old smallish dog in front of the entire family. According to the Mom, there didn't seem to be any reason for this to happen. It broke my heart to hear this. The family was devastated about losing their 12 year old dog and about having to take their Pitty back to the SPCA where it was going to be euthanized.

Dawn Capp is the founder of Chako. I haven't met her personally. But I am grateful for Chako. They save many of our pitbulls from euthanasia and they help us spread good will towards the breed. They also put up an exhibit about Pitties making excellent service dogs!
