I think Rhett is experiencing separation anxiety.
From the time he was 8 weeks old until he was 6 mos old he was in a shelter that had the small cell like cages. He had little human interaction...When we got him he spent his nights in a large dog kennel like these: www.optionsplus.com/diamondkennels.htm
The main photo would be ours with out the divider.
During the day he is either on a tie out or in a fenced yard. If it is a work day then he would be inside all night and during work hours.
He has always hated being put back into his kennel. He didn't bark about it or whine. He barked when all the other dogs barked. He didn't whine when he was left alone. But he would do his best to sneak past your legs when you were coming into his kennel! He experienced a lot more human and dog interaction as well.
Now he is at home with me. He has turned into a velcro dog.
He follows me anywhere I go.
At first he would whine at night when I went to bed. (he's in the same room w/me) But he realized whining wasn't getting him anywhere and now he doesn't do it.
If he is in his crate and I step out of the room, he whines, it progresses into a whiney bark thing. I set his crate up in the livingroom, he's fine if he can see my daughter. But if I am at home chances are if he can't see me he will whine.
Right now he is lounging in his crate, snoozing on and off, acting content with life. But he knows I am near! If I get up and walk out of the room he is up and whining!
When I leave for work he is in his crate. When my daughter gets up she lets him out. She's told me that he doesn't stop whining after I leave. When she leaves she crates him. I have come home for lunch, and no one will be home, I can hear him whining. Now I dont know if he started when he heard someone, or reacted to the other dogs knowing someone was home or what.
I have tried to ignore the whining.
Not letting him out of his crate until he is quiet, but the minute he sees me he stops.
I don't really say anything to him during this.
He has his nylabone, a kong, and a stuffed toy. I make sure his business is taken care of as well.
So, hints, tips, ideas would be great on this big transition in his life would be great.
