A total lack of consideration for the animal. He clearly wants the bone. But mom is busy being a bone head.

Wow - I've had Andrew come and lick my face, but I won't give in to that when he's on MY couch with me and wants ME to move. I couldn't imagine having a child take the dog's bone and want to punish the DOG!

wtf is wrong with people?? seriously.. putting a baby on the flooor with a dog with a bone?? that dog was givng way more signals to remove the child from its area and the parents are just freaking idiots... that dog should get a heros award for not doing anything, and the parents of the baby should seriously get a jackass award for stupidity.. some dogs would not have put up with that, and that dog put up with way more then it should have..

I agree with everyone.. I should have been more clear though.. the question I really had was about the notion of "kiss or dismiss"... that the dog's licking is actually a communication to the kid to go away.

I agree 100% - stupid position to put dog and kid in. That licking may be slightly stress-related, but overall the dog's body language was pretty relaxed.

Who would want their baby playing with a slimy drool ladened dog bone in the first place? Secondly, and probably firstly, common sense *to me* is that you don't put a baby on the floor with the dog and his bone. Thats asking for trouble. Over all I can see how the dog just wanted his bone and for the baby to stop, but I also thought he was behaving very well

My guess is that the dog was conditioned to be "gentle" with the baby so I imagine his thinking was probably - If I bite/mouth baby I get immediate consequence, but maybe if I lick baby I can get the point across without getting totally reamed out...

Of course I feel the same about the mom you guys covered that. I think the dog has learned the licking the baby diverts the baby from the bone. Lick baby I get bone. I also think dog has learned after too much licking mom gets involved separating dog and the baby. Although he did not seem to mind the baby holding the bone. Sometimes Rocky will bring us his bone to hold while he chews it.
