This is about Phyl, my OEW Bulldog...Not a Pit, but some confuse her with one, so I'm going to ask you guys this anyway. How can you tell the difference between messing in the house for spite, or for lack of control? Phyl is crated when I leave for work. Sometimes I'm back in about 4 hours, other times it's closer to 8. When I come back, there's no mess. But when I'm home, she'll mess. Like today, I was sitting here in the office and she pooed right in front of me, out of her crate. Two days ago she pooed in her crate, and last night she busted out of her crate and went on the floor. Now she's never been great for letting me know she has to go. Usually I just let all the dogs out every few hours and she goes. It just seems odd how she seems to mess most when I'm home. There's nothing strange about her poo, so I don't think she's sick. Could this be doggy "f*** you" behavior? I'm not a fan of scrubbing the floor every day Suggestions? Tips?

well, I dont believe dogs do things for "spite", so in my opinion it's a training and/or physical condition issue. When she's out of her crate, you need to learn what her signs are that she's about to poop (like sniffing, circling) and immediately take her out. Do you feed her at a regular time? Most dogs (like people) digest at a particular schedule and if you regulate when you eat, she should become more regular when she poops. When you see her starting to poop in front of you, that's the time to disrupt her and rush her outside. Praise her for going outside.

Yep, she does poop after she eats, and she's fed at regular times twice a day. Usually it's about 30 minutes after she eats, she has to go.
Do you think her crate could be too big? I know she doesn't want to poo in it because she tries to break out to go. I've noticed that a few times too late.
I'm a firm believer in dog spite. Cappy does it all the time.

I used to believe that dogs don't do anything out of spite. Until I met my ex-husbands pug. Before I came into the picture, if his girl friend scolded the dog for naughty behavior, the dog would later pee on her pillow. I didn't believe that such a sweet little pug would do such a thing until the day my oldest daughter and the pug had a confrontation over a toy. The pug later pee'd on my daughters pillow.
*anyways* What emilys said is probably the best you can do. My dad had an issue with one of his dogs who started pooping in the middle of the night. I convinced him to just feed once a day in the morning. It worked on stopping the midnight poo.

Try walking her 20 minutes after she eats. Do it religiously even when you would prefer to just let her out.

I don't believe dogs do it for spite. I can't imagine they understand that concept. If they are peeing on your pillows etc. they are probably marking their territory.

They don't care if it's a "bad" thing or a "good" thing. The trick is to teach them they get good attention for good things and bad attention for bad things.

Ah but the problem is Grandma. Who just like with the kids gives Rocky exactly what he is looking for when he steals. That is CHASE. Also I think Rocky has caught on to getting a treat for bringing and releasing stolen item. It still feels like spite which is my point that maybe Phyl is looking for attention cause she gets it good or bad. Just like children will do. Act out for attention.
