We have 7 (yup count em...7) housecats who lived here years before we adopted Opheila the Amstaff. The cats rule the roost. Our cats will sit in her food bowl and block her from the hall...and Opheila will sit and whine or lay patiently until they move. But outside...Opheila has killed a squirrel and stray cat in front of me during our walks. Does anyone else notice the difference in behavior with the dog and other house pets compared to critters outside?

I notice is a lot in my house. Winston (pit mix) tolerates my indoor cats very well. He has even been known to nap with one from time to time. Mac (my lab) hated cats before he moved in with me. Now he lives peacefully with them... However... if one of the house cats is outside, it is a different story.... it is then tormented and chased. If there is a cat or squirrel, a stray grocery bag in the yard... it is a HUGE deal. While walking the nature trail with Winston we often come across rabbits. He tries so hard to catch them but he's stuck on a leash.
Cleveland doesn't care for cats. He stalks and stares. The cats are smart enough to stay in their part of the house while he's out of his kennel... when he's asleep or in his kennel they roam the house again.

This is interesting. I dont have house cats. But Rocky will chase cats, squirrels and birds that are in the yard. To him the word CAT applies to all the above. Outside of the yard walking on lead he ignores cats, squirrels and birds. One reason may be my teaching him the leave it at a young age. I also refer to cats on the outside as kitty's. Saying leave the kitty. One of the pet stores we go to has cats all over the store. He ignores them. in fact he is now nervous about them since one on the shelf batted his nose for no reason at all. He once also caught up to one in the yard that batted his snout and he came running back in with his tail between his legs. Usually they are on the other side of fence tormenting him.

Chubby is confused by squirrels and scared of cats. Are we still sure he's a pitbull? lol

Just a friendly reminder that even housecats that have been well-loved by the dogs for an extended period of time can trigger prey drive - and the situation may end badly for the cat. It's a good idea to keep dogs seperated from cats when no one is there to supervise, especially when living with high-drive breeds. *Standard disclaimer

It's a good idea to keep dogs seperated from cats when no one is there to supervise, especially when living with high-drive breeds. *Standard disclaimer This is very very true! Winston is a very tolerant soul, and has always gotten along with my house cats. He torments them of course, and they have tormented him as well. You could usually find both dogs and one cat in my bed at night! But adding Cleveland to the mix must have triggered something in Winston to try and catch Tootie the other day. We had a bit of a spat that has led to the cats having a dog free area. Every place I have lived there have been safe places for the cats. This time I've just made it harder for the canine residents to get to them, I also do not leave Cleveland free to roam the house if no one is home!

Benny used to love Bowie, but he would lunge and whine at cats he saw outside. I always thought he sounded more like he wanted to play with them than hurt them, but I never gave him the chance to find out!
We always crated Benny when we weren't home, so he was never alone in the house with Bowie.

fureverywhere, I find this very upseting that Ophelia has killed a squirrel and a cat! While on your walk? Why would you allow this to happen?
Our dog Dara has a very high prey drive and we keep her seperated from our three cats. I would NEVER forgive myself if anything happened.

I am sure you were upset fureverywhere. Just wondering what happened? Did Opheila break free from her leash?
