I need some useful suggestions. How do you handle unreasonable fear in a pitty? Opheila is a rescue dog and we don't know anything about her background at all. She trembles at the predictable...thunderstorms and the vacum cleaner...but there's alot of other stuff...people in hooded sweatshirts at night, trunk door slamming day or night, and sometimes things I can't even see or hear. We were walking last night. It was a clear evening and she was happily pulling me along until we got across the street from a wooded, fenced area, a few spotlights, nothing really...ordinairy industrial lot..and Opheila FROZE. So here I am about 2 miles from home, nobody to pick us up at that hour and she's shaking and staring at this lot. I carried her a few blocks but 60lbs of Pookins is heavy (at least human kids can put their arms and legs around you, alittle easier)...woof...we finally got past the lot and by the end of the street she stopped looking over her shoulder and was ready to roll. Hubby says not to coddle the fear but when ya gotta get home eventually what do you do? How would anyone suggest I work her through it when she freezes and trembles right up her leash?

I do not believe in do not coddle the fear. I found that petting Rocky in thunderstorms for example he will stop trembling. I believe I am showing him good things happen during the storm. I also will have good treats ready and a soon as the boom I give him the treat. Hoping he will think the noise means I get a treat. I got him from over reacting to a noise our hot water heater was making a hammer noise in the pipes when it broke down. He associated this hammer noise with sprinklers coming on which he would hide behind a table. But when it happened every few minutes this poor dog was trembling and trying to get away. So I brought him to the part of the house where it was loudest which happened to be his safe place, My bedroom. And every time it hammered I gave him a treat. He does not like the noise but he tolerated it. You can also desensitize the noises by playing dvd of thunderstorms. rewarding for not trembling. Again I personally do not believe in the do not coddle thing. We like them to coddle us when we are upset or scared. Makes us feel better.

Oh yeah and when on walks when they freeze try walking other way if it is possible. I have also brought good treats on walks if I know he does not want to pass an area where there is new dog or something. And I really encourage him with high pitched voice luring with treat at the same time practically running. Then when we get passed I give him a jackpot of treats for getting past. The next time he is less reluctant.

There is recent research showing that you cannot reinforce fear, as it is a response and not a behavior. No need to worry about not coddling. It's good to reassure her by making her feel safe and secure. Carolann has some god suggestions. You also might try a "thundershirt" www.thundershirt.com/. It has worked for Dharma... she is very upset by thunder, fireworks, and things that sound like gunshots.

Did not know there has been research but I have proven it with Rocky. I always felt that was crap. I dont like thunderstorms either. I have a fear and comforting me or hanging out with me does not reinforce my fear. It helps me to feel less fearful. I fear it because my aunt who babysat for me was extremely fearful and would turn out lights and sit in a hallway and read to me and she did not comfort me she put the fear on me. Ask Temple Grandin she will tell you her hugging machine helped her to feel comfort when she was having fear or upset. Maryellen is using the thundershirt on Sedona. Wonder how it is working for her.
