Years ago when my oldest daughter was about 2, I attended a child behavior seminar. I had a bratty kid, and was looking for a better way to deal with her. The speaker taught a child rearing method that reminds me of positive reinforcement dog training.
He said to 'catch the child being good'. If he's playing nicely by himself, ruffle his hair, give him a hug, or some other sort of low key attention. Make a big deal out of accomplishments etc. There is a lot more to it obviously, but he said that if you always catch the unwanted behavior and give attention to it, that is what you will get more of. Start paying attention to the behavior we want and that is what you will see more often. It works for kids, and it works for dogs!
When we got Gizmo, he wasn't potty trained... I really had no idea on how to accomplish the task, other than put him on a schedule. He didn't' know what 'potty' or 'outside' meant. So I always used the term go outside and potty. When he'd pee or poo I would act like a happy idiot saying good potty! In no time he knew what potty, and outside meant, and he knew what he had to do out there. I think that method worked a lot better then rubbing a dogs face in the mess inside or scolding etc.
I'm a fan of squirt bottles! It's a good distraction for my water hating lab!

I haven't read through this whole thread, so if someone has already mentioned this my apologies.
I just tried to watch the video and it said the link was disabled according to "copyright infringement" or something like that. I wish I saw this thread early enough, so I could've shared the video on FB. I know a few people in pit bull rescue who should watch something like that. I'm mad I missed it!

The only three times I have ever roughed up a dog was once when somebody we stayed with let his beagle chase down my cats-we moved out soon after-it wasn't the dogs fault I should've of kicked the dingdong owner instead...and I shook Ophie twice-both times she had a critter in it's death throes, useless because she didn't drop them anyway. And I still felt guilty reacting that way. But Caesar...that's appalling

Interesting well at least I reached out to at least one person. Wish I had used my recording program as I would have it for my next class at the library. I will be doing a shelter adoption program at some point and I plan to point out that I am NOT a Cesar believer.
