I was just told that I can't get renters insurance through Progressive because I have a pit bull. Does anyone know where I can get information if insurance companies are allowed to do this? ???

Well, I hope they don't cancel my car insurance. That seems ridiculous. They might be allowed to do whatever they want, but I'd be curious to see how it's written in the policy.

Farmers Insurance is nondiscriminatory. When we buy a house next year that's who we're getting out insurance through.

I work at Farmers Insurance, and we do insure homes that have pit bulls.

I think Travelers is also non discriminatory. I just never told my insurance that I have a dog. I had the insurance a good 15 years before the dog. A friend of mine had to pay an extra thousand a year for having a German Shepherd.

Traveler's is VERY strongly against "aggressive dog breeds" including but not limited to APBT, AST, Rotties, Dobermans, Chow Chows and more. They have a MASSIVE list of dogs they refuse to insure. Believe me... they said they'd cancel my insurance if I have a mutt that even looks like one. Andrew is in hiding because of their ridiculous policies. Unfortunately they're HUNDREDS cheaper than any other company that doesn't discriminate.

My insurance company makes you carry an additional $50k liability for pitties, dobies, rotties and shepards. So there shouldn't be any problem with my 90lb "chihuahua".

When I looked into homeowners insurance through State Farm they asked a lot of questions about my dog - bite history, age, etc. - but they didn't ask specifically about the breed of the dog. I guess it's a double edged sword - I would say if they don't allow you to have pitbulls - boycott - but on the other hand - the cheaper your insurance, the more you can spend on your baby =) If I ever had to fill something out - I would just put that Scout is a mixed breed - she's a rescue - unless they wanted to do some sort of genetic testing - they could never prove otherwise.
