ROCKY figured out how to play with my moms dog Aura today. Only took from March till now. I was so happy for him. Aura is a small about 30 lbs and not a Pit Bull. She is likely a JRT/Cattle dog. She has tons of energy and likes to jump and nip at people and chase and nip Rocky. He dislikes that. but likes the chase. Today was their umpteenth play date probably 8th or more. lost track. She was laying down and he came and laid next to her and started pushing with his head and opening his mouth and making that air noise with mouth open that dogs do with other dogs. She started doing it back. Then he showed her how to wrestle. They took a break and I let them in house for some air conditioning break. Then he did it again. It was not real crazy just doing mouthing. I have never ever seen him do this with another dog ever. I think he was afraid. He plays this mouthy game only with my Husband and my boys never biting just opening the mouth and making air noise. I think he was showing her how he would like to play. Wish my battery was not dead in the camera. Rocky even went out on the grass and rolled on his back to show her how to do it. Putting his paws in the air and and ground wrestling. I hope they can do more of this because her chasing and biting and barking was getting old. This was a good day!

Yeah but todays play she got a little too rough with her bitey face thing and Rocky has a very small gash under his eye and he also let her hold on too his neck too often and too long. He has all red marks on his neck was bleeding a little but did not seem to care kept going in for more fun. I did not think it was fun but if I yelled knock it off they did. Is this normal bitey face?

Is this normal bitey face? For my dogs, yes. But it depends on the dogs. Dharma, Otis, and Brandy can play bitey face (not all three at once - it's always two at a time) and may come away with a few scrapes, but nothing that I worry about. They keep it in line. Dharma is fine playing bitey face with Barley, but I can't let Barley play that way with Otis or Brandy because they get way out of hand. It's weird, but it totally depends on the dynamics of both dogs. I only allow short play sessions before things have a chance to escalate. I guess my only caution would be keep it short and make sure that neither dog gets overly aroused or annoyed.

Ok then I will continue to keep it short. Rocky was almost asking for it by rolling onto his back and letting her grab onto his neck then he would kick her off with his feet. Again I did not get it on video. But he seemed to be having fun with it.

I'm no pro, but it sounds pretty normal to me. Mine do lots of bitey-face, along with some play bite and hold wrestling. Dottie will let Eko grip the side of her face too long sometimes. She eventually let's him know to quit it, and he does. I referee when the tone gets too competitive. I think it helps that mine have similar play styles. It sounds like Rocky and Aura are working out the rules. The more they do, the more you'll know when it's time to step in as referee.
