Wow....this is very informing....although I have done a lot of reading and know (on paper) the proper way to use a break stick. Seeing that video makes it soo much easier to understand. I have one question tho. What was the apparatus the dog in the video was biting?

It looks like some kind of tug plaything. Oh, and I wouldn't use a tent stake like in the video. Get a real parting stick.

I would rather know how to break up a dog fight, them end up with a dead dog because of my lack of knowledge. When Mac attacked Cleveland, it took everything I had to get him off of Cleveland. Had Cleveland decided to fight back I would have been screwed. when your dogs get into a fight it turns you inside out.. Between the fear, and the dismay, you end up wanting to puke Imagine people doing for enjoyment. That's puke material. That really gives you pause for thought-when you actually witness first hand the damage any dog can do to another creature...the fury, the blood...now imagine dog fights for entertainment...then again some of those same folks used to bring picnics to lynchings, yeeehawww

i have 2 breaksticks here, got them from pbrc years ago. i keep them handy just in case. i only had one real fight years ago between my gsd and rott, lots of noise, lots of blood due to ear damage, it could have been worse but i was able to break it up being by myself. fights suck. if you keep leashes handy you can try to leash one and tie it up behind a door but by yourself its going to be harder..

Doxie story for ya...
My mom had her St. Bernard at the vet for a checkup when an emergency case came in. Two dachshunds got into a fight and one bit the other's ear off...and ate it!! My cousin is the vet so she was telling my mom all about trying to repair what was left of the ear. Dog ended up being fine.
Oh, and a BC story, too...
A co-worker of my mom's had three border collies. One day he came home from work to find that two of them had killed (ripped to shreds) the other dog. He said they had never had a fight before and never, ever expected to come home to that. Felt really bad for him, because he's the animal guy at school who takes all kinds of reptiles, arachnids, snakes to other schools for educational programs.
Just wanted to throw in those for proof that any dog, regardless of breed, is capable of major damage during a fight!

After the two incidents with my dogs. I did purchase a couple of the tent stakes because of the stigma in my area of owning a break stick. They consider them dog fight tools. Thank goodness we have never had to use them after the initial incidents. We crate n rotate and are very determined to always keep them separate. Beastley still hasn't showed signs of DA unlike my Mastiff

Parting sticks are designed to separate the jaws with a very short insertion. They work quickly, because they are wide and flat. To try to use a tent stake I would think you have to insert far too much, and with less leverage it would be less effective. Please reconsider, you have dogs with large mouths and the wider stick would work much better if, heaven forbid, you need to use it. I doubt anyone would accuse you of fighting your dogs just because you have parting sticks. If tent stakes worked, dogfighters would use them.

the classic homemade break stick is a hammer handle with the end shaped/whittled... Surely a hammer handle in your house would not be considered a dogfighting tool.....

Wish Buffy the Vampire Slayer was still around...the stakes she used would probably be perfect!
