So Chubby has peed on the carpet like three or four times in the last 7 months (which were cleaned up and didn't smell anymore). Last week he was getting a little sick and for four straight days he had accidents (both pee and poop) on the carpet on the same spot. I think they happened very early in the day because by the time the bf got home the pee was pretty much dried in (and at this point we will probably be replacing the carpet since trying to use a few different cleaners has left the carpet slightly discolored and and still stinks of urine).
My question is what should I do to make sure this doesn't happen again? I can't not have carpets because without them the neighbor downstairs complains about hearing Chubby's nails clipping the floors all day (they are trimmed as low as I can get them without hitting the vein). I am thinking of trying to just section him off to a longish hallway we have with a babygate (pressure mounted kind since we have to try and keep drilling to a minimum). I've noticed he won't pee/poop on the side of the carpet as his blanket is on (I cover a section of the carpet with his blanket so he won't get it too dirty and he won't be rubbing up against any chemicals from carpet).
What can I do?!? This carpet was 7 months old and I loved it, but it looks like it will have to be replaced. I just don't want to be in the same predicament another few months from now (and it is wearing the bf's patience thin with all the peeing indoors!)

I've always heard the "feed them there and they won't mess there" trick, but never had to use it. Anyone know if that works? If it does, maybe sprinkle treats there or feed him dinner there and maybe he won't mess there.

If it does, maybe sprinkle treats there or feed him dinner there and maybe he won't mess there. Dont think that will work. My moms dog plays with her treat ball which spreads treats all over and she still pees there. Only on the carpet never on the bare floor. I have a spray bottle of some stuff I got at pet smart which takes the smell out pretty good. but just found this recipe www.dogchatforum.com/dog_urine_odor.htm and since it is almost the same as the skunk removal that mythbusters proved works, it is worth a try. Let me know if it works as I will have my mom have stuff on hand for me to clean up as of course she has peed the last day I watched her.

do you know he doesn't have a UTI?
What I used when Mr P didn't seem to be getting it, was a "belly band" which you can buy pretty cheaply or make yourself. The theory is they pee on themselves a few times and get the message. But may not work for every dog...
also, clip his nails frequently and the quick will recede so you can clip the nails shorter and shorter

That does sound like a good mixture. I have used white vinegar in the past with good luck. I have also used the oxy stain remover shown at the bottom of the page. Didn't know it has hydrogen peroxide in it.

Jeffers seems to have a lot of odor/urine eliminating products right now. I'm browsing the site now for some supplies and found lots of new detectors and black light stuff.

Woolite Pet+Oxygen smells really good but I gotta try that mythbuster spray. Ophie is great with her bathroom habits. The oldest cat, not so much...she's not sick, just enraged she doesn't have a private litterbox.

Sugar like Emily said have you ruled out a UTI?

Didn't even think about it. He is on some antibiotics right now that are supposed to ease inflammation and get rid of any nasty things caused by his colitis. If he has a UTI, do you think it woudl help? He's on metronilazole (spelling?) I think. Can double check when I get home. The vet also gave him propectaline (again, probably not the right spelling) but I know that one is more to bulk up the poop.

Have you tried Zero Odor? A friend put it in her carpet shampooer and she said it worked great. or vinegar? By now the pee has probably already seeped into the floor boards and he can still smell the scent. I would also get him a check at vet for a UTI. He may of gotten it by taking the antibiotics.

No, flagyl (metronidazole) won't cure a UTI. You might want to bring in a first pee of the am sample to the vet. I've got to bring in Murphy to recheck his urine as well. I just run him over in the am, and let the vet staff get the sample, but I'm 2 mins away from my vet. Murphy had had a few pee accidents that I blamed on the cats (bad me), once I realized it was Murph I knew something was wrong. He does not pee in the house...turns out he had a UTI and clavamox cleared it up. As far as getting out the pee smell, I like Get Serious enzyme cleaner. Good luck, I hope Chubs feels better.

Poor Chubs!
I looooooove OdoBan - and just saw it at Home Depot for $3 a bottle. I usually buy mine at Sam's Club because you get the concentrate and can make it as weak or strong as you want. It won't help the discoloration from urine in the carpet, but it WILL get rid of the smell - plus it's a disinfectant at certain concentrations! I've used it a million times for a bazillion different things and even use it to disinfect the foam padding I put in the dog crates.
As for stopping him from going in the same spot - after doing something about odor removal - what about temporarily putting some furniture over the spot where he's been going? Maybe out of sight out of mind (assuming you can remove the odor)?

Will have to see when i can get a ride to his vet (20-30 minute ride). It seems between all the different products we used to get rid of the smell/stain the carpet look awful so we are probably going to replace it (most likely with Flor carpet tiles (http://www.flor.com/) because they are soooooo much easier to clean!). As of now we have put a garbage bag and a book crate over the spot and he hasn't had any accidents since our Friday visit to the vet. He isn't straining to pee, no foul pee odor, no blood in urine and no excessive licking. He seems to be doing better (poop is very very slowly starting to look normal again). Once his poop is back to normal then we are taking him to the vet to have his newest tumor removed.

Also trying to see if we can scrounge up enough cash to get a dogwalker to come in the afternoon. Just sucks that there aren't that many (very veeeery few around here, they are all mostly in Manhattan) and the best choice of the bunch charges about $15 for a half hour (times five days is $75 a week and translates to an extra $300 a month!) sometimes I really really hate city living
