Things happen for a reason. I believe that. I know many think it is just something we say in order to cope with disaster but if that is what it takes to cope then I will believe in it. Good Luck to Ollie.

I talked to Jim yesterday and explained to him that I had gotten advice from knowledgeable and credible resources. I told him that I do not feel it would be best for Oliver or the children to put him back in the home. The risk is too high for him to bite again. He won't be home until sometime this weekend, and requested that time to talk to his wife. I told him we would help find him another dog, or he could have one we're trying to place right now if they liked him. (a mutt)
Is it wrong of me to have more faith in this dog doing great in life than I do of the family?

I personally would not get their hopes up about getting another dog that they can fail with. They need to be educated on shock collars, body language, and proper training tools and techniques. Let them know that the problems with Ollie did not arise until he was in their home. Yes, it might just be because maybe he doesn't like kids, but I'm leaning toward it being their lack of education. I don't think it'll matter what dog they get. They'll continue failing until they are properly educated.

I really don't know, but that they don't seem well guided about dogs and still used a shock collar...maybe you could suggest all the nice cats out there who need homes?

I feel bad for the little girl. My son was balling the day we had to put Nikki (the doberman) in the car to go to the rescue. Although it is for the best the child probably does not understand. It is just too bad that happened. But thank god it was not even worse and they had enough sense to call you for help. They need time to heal and learn before getting another dog. Hopefully they realize that. And if they want another dog that bad they will just go somewhere else and get one and may not have the support and probably wont tell the other place what happened. I would not push them into a dog but I would support them and educate if they seem they will get another dog.

I don't think it'll matter what dog they get. They'll continue failing until they are properly educated. In the past Oliver has had no issues with children. He spent the first year of his life with them, and I was never afraid to introduce him to families with kids before. So I do think it was the families lack of education, and supervision. There are 5 kids in the family, maybe that is just too much for him to deal with. They have had a couple of dogs in the past, but small dogs. They had a beagle until he died of old age awhile back. They wanted to try a bigger dog this time. At this point I'm just trying to smooth the way as best as I can. I don't care what they decide, they are not getting Oliver back.
