My dog does the same thing with his food. When I leave out I give him his morning portion but when I return it will still be there. Once I arrive home; no matter how long I've been gone, he then decides to eat his food then thinks he's gonna get his dinner portion. He keeps walking back looking at his empty bowl, like man I'm starved why don't I get to eat.

Mine will do the same with water. Won't drink a drop till I get home, then it's like a rush to the bowl and they slurp it all down. Dogs are strange!

Rocky does that with Water and he does not play with toys or nylabones. I think he just sleeps on the couch. Especially since he does not get couch while we are home and on it.

I don't recommend leaving a bone unsupervised. Even if she's not touching it while you're gone.

Chubby totally does the water thing. Won't touch a drop until I get home, lol. Weirdo.

Second what Mary said about not leaving a bone out when no one is there to supervise.
With regards to Zena not touching the bone the only thing I can compare it to was the fact that my husband's dog would not eat her dinner until they were in the same room with her.

Mary do you feel safe to leave kongs? I have my mom leave a kong for her dog with stuff frozen in it as this is what I did when Rocky was younger. I felt safer with that instead of marrow bones. Otherwise Aura will chew her bed and rip stuffing out even worse than chance of choking on piece of kong.

I don't feel safe leaving anything, TBH. And a lot of dogs can rip up a Kong. I only provide chewies when I'm there watching. This is a "what risk is acceptable to you" scenario.
