OMG last night I just got to end of my driveway and was admiring my own work of weeding a garden in the front. I live on a quiet private dead end where a private driveway leads to mine. However I can see down the street to neighbors, I cant even get into explaining but these people have been a root to much of my anxiety. Anyway I felt Rocky was concerned about something so I looked in that direction, when suddenly their dog comes rounding around out there driveway at full speed ahead. Since I have encountered this dog and quite a few others lately, I have learned to haul ass in the other direction. So I screamed to my husband who happened to be out to chase that dog away. The last time this dog approached us while owner was near by I had to curse, scream and stomp my feet and she took off. This time I looked back and she was running directly for us with hackles up, baring teeth and growling. This really scared the sh*t out of me because I never saw her like that. I was thinking she is after me now because I screamed at her the last time. I am not sure what stopped her in her tracks but when I turned and saw how close she was so did Rocky so he went off with a warning, I yelled Dakota get out of here. and my husband puffed himself and growled and told her to get the f out of here, all at the same time. Well she just turned around and ran home. Owner standing there in the driveway. I have been encountering dogs off lead or coming out of their yards way to often lately. I think we are encountering it more because I have been out on walks more with my mom and her dog at different times of day. So glad Aura was not with us. She reacts to all dogs walking past even on lead quiet ones. Rocky usually does not but have been noticing him being very cautious lately. In a months time we have encountered the dog I talked about 3x (which could be way worse as this dog gets out alot). A fat on the large size chi like dog 3x with owners present. some kind of mut mix running around with kids with no shoes on a back road that looks like another planet. (wont go that way anymore). Now I can understand an isolated incident but this is getting ridiculous. Last night my heart was pounding so bad that I could barely catch my breath. I almost started hyperventilating after the dog took off and we had not even started our walk. I could use suggestions on how to prepare for incidents like these. Like what could I bring with me. Is an air horn good idea? Oh this reminds me at least we did not encounter the bear and her cubs that were out while I was walking the other day. So maybe I just answered my own question to bring an air horn. I will not kick a dog or hit especially the one down the street cause those people are looking to have a law suit against me. One they need the money two they want to look better then us. three they are a family of sociopaths. Sorry for my rant, but I have to get the word out to these people in this town. I am doing a program at my library next month for adopt a shelter pet month. I am going to talk about this. I am also thinking of posting something on the village fb page but I dont want some people to know I posted because there is the wack family who has and will purposely let that dog out again while I am walking by.

Sounds terrifying!! I think an air horn is a great idea. Anything else, like citronella spray or something, and they'll probably try to make it sound like you were harming their dog. I hope you can work something out!

I was going to say pepper spray, but I like the citronella spray idea. Sorry you are having to go through this. My first reaction is to scream at the other dog in my mom tone. I don't know what I'd do if one actually charged, or anything like that. You could always start carrying a cane on your walks.

I might just ask the local Animal control what is correct, this way if they end up calling on me they will have already told me what to do. I have called already about this dog being out far too often and the home was visited. These people are a lost cause. There have been several incidents between us and them a few involving dogs its a long story. I have to be real careful here. One slip up they will turn it on to me. I have been dealing with them for 10 yrs. I have already seriously considered moving about 6 years ago but decided not to let them push us out of our home. I will look at citronella spray. I was thinking though that the air horn might scare Rocky or hurt his ears. Although he is not overly effected by sirens. He watches the parade with me and does not react to the loud fire trucks. However if we make siren noises or whistles with our mouth he howls. It is cute but I wonder if it hurts his ears. I am going to look into small noise makers I can easily carry and have a hip bag ready to go with everything I need for a walk. Today is going to rain so gives me time to think and figure things out. Oh and as for banjo music, its beyond that. Its Jackass style over there. I over heard the mom telling the police that the kids her son has been "associating" with and she no longer wants him "associating" with spray painted graffiti on the walls of her sons room and doors. One of these associations has been living with them for months. She is a joke, puts on this sweetie pie fake facade and throws adults and kids under the bus to make herself and her son look better. Not everyone is on to it. But I have been from day 1 I knew something was off. But as for other loose dogs I have to come up with a plan. One way could be to not take Rocky for walks. And I have seriously thought about that and there have been times I did not take him because I knew that dog and other dogs were out. On a lighter note neighbor right behind me has put up a six foot black chain link that can barely be seen through trees and brush after epic invisible fence failure and lack of training the invisible fence. Poor dog crossed over to check out Rocky got to my fence and then would not get back into her yard. As the owner took collar off dragged this poor crying dog back over the line telling it you wont get collar is off. I tried to explain they are doing it all wrong. then I made a few calls to let them know their dog got out again a few times after that except dog got out a different way. So yay for no more shocking. Took a few dogs on runners and one that roamed before they got this one that I think they paid for which is why they dont want to loose her. In the 20 yrs I have been here they have had 4 dogs and never a fence till now. Sometimes opening your mouth works.

Ugh, I'm so sorry that you have this jerk of a neighbor CA! I would have been both and terrified in that situation. I don't know what other advice to offer. I know you are so careful and observant when you are out with Rocky. I think the citronella spray may be a good idea. What a nightmare of a neighbor!

Thank you, they are something else. But actually I just realized I would not have Rocky if they were not a wrench in my life. Everything happens for a reason. I do not and can not talk to any of them. I think everyone has some strange neighbors. In fact they think we are jackasses. And believe me I have tried in the past when asked for advice. It is a lost cause I can not waste my energy with what they do. But when my dog is threatened and I cant comfortably walk him through my own street, it makes me sad.

BTW I almost forgot a few weeks ago I got chased by her (the dog) when I was on my motorcycle. That scared me too as a new rider. Luckily my husband was behind me and able to distract her by revving his bike. I just gunned it. I do remember when I got off the bike yelling if I see that dog out again thats it Im calling. I know they heard me.

Patricia McConnell has suggested carrying an umbrella, and pop it open at the dog... most will spook away from it. This would only be a temporary measure until AC confiscates the dog or arrests the owner.

CA sorry that u have deal with these crappy irresponsible owners. I think the umbrella is actually a really good idea. You can carry the citronella and airhorn but too but i like the idea of being able to open something and have a pseudo barrier.

I like the umbrella idea. good one. I have to ask my neighbor beside me if she saw that dog coming for us. Always good to have a witness I guess. Wow I would have never thought to video that. I was in flight mode. trying to drag Rocky into the yard. figuring safer on our own property. Ironic that several years ago the man owner of the dog threatened to shoot my husband and a doberman we had for a brief period, if we did not put up a fence the next day. Ridiculous when I think about it.

Ok apparently this dog was out at midnight the other night my son was walking home from a gathering at a friends house. Said dog kept going up to him and barking he did not want to yell as it was late so he just kept telling her to go away and she would run and come back. I did hear Rocky barking but I did not get up to see what was going on since he was just giving a bark like something was out there like deer.

Found out the same day dog was out barking at my son that my very next door neighbor let that dog into its house at 5am. She was barking at him while he was leaving for work so he shooed her back to the house and opened the door and dog ran in.

I would call on them. They aren't going to learn their lesson and their dog is going to suffer the consequences.
