That's true, and with multi dogs it's a totally different situation too.

I'm definitely the over-cautious type. Some of this stems from personal experience and how these experiences have shaped my perceptions over the years. I'd also like to think that working hard to educate myself, being a trainer and behavior counselor, and spending years and years doing this work has influenced my standpoint on certain things as well It IS about what's an acceptable risk to you, personally, and what you know about your animals as individuals. But it's just so sad to me when I hear about a death or injury that could have been prevented JUST via seperation.

I haven't read the whole thread but I wanted to add in an experience I had a long time ago with my Boston Terrier Bela. He was always crated when we weren't home. I had roommates so although he was crated everyday it was never for more than a few hours. One day I left and he was in his crate. I came back a few hours later and his face was all bloodied and he had blood all over the inside of the crate (it was a plstic kind with the metal door.) He was really freaked out when I got home and I had no idea why... until a few days later. My landlord had told me he came over to the house and knocked for a good 15 minutes at the door because he thought someone was home and just asleep because he heard the dog barking. I guess that was enough to really freak Bela out. I had no idea something like that would upset him so much because people didn't usually go to the back door and knock if we weren't home as we had a doorbell at the front door and were on the 3rd floor. If my landlord had never told me that I would have never known what upset him.
Anyway it might be something simple like that, especially since Bola is new to your house. Something small might have really freaked him out that he wasn't used to and same for Honey. Or Bola freaking out probably freaked her out too. Who knows.
