If he is still a little puppy, and he nips, exchange your fingers for a toy, and don't use your hands to play with him without one. If he still nips, you can try a puppy time out, ignore him then go back to play w/ a toy. You can try the "Ouch!" shout, but sometimes that just causes more vigorous play because they think it is a game. Another thing you can try is to feed his meals to him by hand.

Ignoring works very well. What he wants is your attention, so when he nips, immediately get up and walk away.

for my puppy yelping ouch like a puppy when he nipped me worked. BTW he was a bitey face until about 8months old. however the nips hurt less and less as he learned when I yelped it hurt. Also giving a something else to chew helps sometimes.

I say "Ouch" or "No" when Saxon bites and he stops biting and starts licking profusely as if to apologize. He is almost a year and does still mouth occasionally, but he has a very soft mouth.

Rocky is 6 years old and still tries to play bitey face once in a while. But if I ouch he also will lick profusely like apologizing for getting too rough. Glad the ouch is working.

How old is Troy? I adopted my dog as an adult (around 2years ish) and he was a big-time nipper (and let me tell you, it hurt sometimes!!). I did a lot of the "yelp!" when he nipped and would ignore him for like three minutes. He learned after a while that I don't like nipping or mouthing and has gotten soooo much better! So don't worry, there is always hope! Sometimes dog will be good for a while and then forget their manners. You just have to go back to the basics and work on it again

Just do something about it now while he's little. When I worked at PetSmart somebody came in one night with a maybe a year old bull doggie mix, not full grown but big enough for nipping to break skin, and the people were just like "Awww isn't he so playful?" Uh.no.

Puppy nipping is totally normal - no need to worry about it. Troy is teething and exploring his world via his mouth You're taking the right approach. Do NOT punish the behavior, simply exchange a toy for your hand, or get up and walk away. I personally don't use the yelping method because I've found for some dogs they tend to think it's a game. If the mouthing gets too hard or a puppy won't stop, I'll give a stern "Ah ah!" and remove my hands. But if the yelping is working for you, no reason to quit doing it. Also see the following page for important info on teaching appropriate "mouth behavior". If you don't have a clicker, use the word YES as a substitute (Troy does the right thing, say YES! and offer a treat). www.clickertraining.com/node/168
