HI! I am new to this breed though have owned boxers for over 20 years. I thought I had seen just about every odd behavior/obsession until Ruby came into our pack and I'd like to see what some of you think is going on with her.
First, she has been in our home for three days, with two boxers (M&F), and is getting along quite well. She was a shelter dog for 8 months, but obviously was well-socialized, considering. She is spayed but has had puppies.
Now, for the mysterious behavior.
When she is playing or wants to initiate play, she will nose under my female boxer's back leg and begin humping. She also does this when she is about to get up on a piece of furniture for a moment.
Now I have had females who will get over another dog and hump and I consider it a dominant display. But with her, her nose is under the other dog.
What's going on here?

Hey there....
Ya know, dogs like people get weird, quirky habits. I don't know that humans always even understand what WE do and why. So the best we can do with dogs is guess. I don't think there is anything to necessarily be worried about here. Somehow this is a little habit she's developed. Without actually seeing what's going on, I can't guess what the motivation might be here. What'd I'd suggest is gently redirecting her attention to get her to stop doing it, and try to find another behavior for her to engage in.
Humping can definitely be a control-acquiring behavior, so don't allow her to continue doing it, especially if she is doing it to another dog - some dogs can take offense and this could potentially lead to a fight.
