Is it normal for rescue to make their volunteers pay dues? I am volunteering at one near me and they require $25 for dues. I have no problem with it but I was just wondering if that's what most rescues do.

haha...I didn't think anything of it but the Mrs. said it sounded a little strange so I figured I'd ask. The rescue is Second Chance For Animals in Somerset NJ www.secondchanceforanimals.org/.

I was mistaken the dues are $15 but I have to purchase a shirt from them for $10 and that's how I got the $25. Here's how they word it:
Please note: All volunteers are asked to pay yearly dues of $15. New volunteers are also required to purchase a Second Chance for Animals volunteer t-shirt for $10. We are very grateful for your help and realize that many volunteers donate their time in lieu of a monetary contribution, but this additional financial support helps us run our organization. Thank you so much for your understanding.

That is REALLY weird. Board members are often asked to pay dues or an annual contribution, but I don't know of any mission based nonprofits that require volunteers to pay dues. It's not an association, not a membership club like Kiwanis or something. I've been through a lot of fundraising trainings, and sat through a lot of silly ideas, but never heard this. So weird! ??? ETA: And depending on the type of work that the volunteers are doing, this might even be illegal.

Ok you have to buy a shirt....fine...but on top of that don't think dues are necessary.
Good luck with finding an apartment complex. Where are you guys looking to move to...same area or someplace new?

Weird. I've never heard of dues for a rescue organization. I thought they got their funds through adoption, donations and personal funds...
