Meet Gracie, one of the dogs rescued from Michael Vick’s notorious dog-fighting ring, this weekend.
She’ll be appearing at “Beyond the Myth,” a documentary about pit bulls being screened exclusively in Virginia at the Grace Street Theater.
Presented by the Richmond Animal League (RAL) and Gracie’s Guardians, “Beyond the Myth” explores the reasons why the public has a fear of pit bulls and hopes to change the perception that pit bulls are inherently vicious.
The movie’s producer, Libby Sherrill, will also be on hand to talk about the breed and the process of making the movie.
Gracie's Guardians, an initiative of RAL, was created in April of this year to pinpoint pit bulls and the problems they face.
Already, the group has secured 10 adoptions for pit bulls they've rescued from local shelters.
Their name, Gracie's Guardians, comes from Gracie, the dog taken from Vick's property. She was adopted by an RAL board member and she'll be on hand at the film screening. A very sweet, mellow, calm dog, Lowery says, "she's a good representative. Especially to come from that background, to see that this is one of those dogs some people call monsters. It can change a lot of people's opinions."
Lowery says that Gracie's Guardians and RAL wanted to screen "Beyond the Myth" to change people's opinions about pit bulls.
"There's this proliferation of bad blood grounded in misinformation," Lowery says. "The movie helps put some of that in perspective. It tries to debunk those thoughts and misperceptions."
