Hello all.
New to the forum. This past week myself and the rest of my family became the proud owners of a 3 year old pit-mix that we adopted from the Humane Society. This is our first pit anything, we've had a lab-retreiver mix as well as a poodle-mixed in the past. We were told that she was mixed with Sheperd, though really it's anyone's guess.
First off our new baby Maxine has been a joy to own so far, she came already house-broken, new basic commands and is easily re-directed by voice, clicker-training, and of course lots of treats! When we lost our last dog due to cancer at 12.5 years, we said said right away that we did NOT want to adopt any sort of pitbull. We were right into the thick of the 'dangerous dog' mess, believing most of what was said on the news/media.
We are now laughing wildly at ourselves for ever buying into it, our pit-mix acts better behaved then a good portion of the other dogs on this block.
That said, she could use a few manner tune-ups, I've noticed in the past couple of days that she's been on her walks that whenever we come across other dogs, whether they are on a leash or in their yards that Maxine will make lunge for them, the fur on her back will stand up a bit, and she will start to bark/growl.
The Humane society said that she did get along with other dogs and cats as well, so I don't know if this is just her trying to protect us, (She dose this behavior more with myself then my father), if she's just excited, or if it's somthing more that a little interaction with other dogs would'nt fix. She was a surrender at the shelter from a previous owner who didn't have the room in her trailer for a dog Maxine's size.
Would love to hear from someone else what their thoughts are on this, I certainly don't want to do anything that would encourage this behavior, and would like to take steps to curb it/ find out what the root cause of it is.
~ Thanks
