The past two hikes I went on with Maryellen and Dave have been interesting. This is not a free for all hike but a very controlled on leash situation where for the most part all attendants are quite respectful. What Rocky and I get out of it is interacting with other dogs and understanding their body language. It has been very good for him. below I am posting 2 photos of him of the dog (male Rotti) that from 1st day of hike gave Rocky a message. He happens to be dog of the Hike organizer who is also a trainer. Notice he is wearing a muzzle because he is not a friendly dog. BTW he is not the only dog wearing a muzzle. This is an awesome hike for those who's dogs need the opportunity to learn to tolerate other dogs. On the last Hike this past weekend Rotti was directly in front of us for a good part of hike. Sometimes he stopped and we could just pass him as others did but Rocky would stop Dead and look away and wait for him to start on again. Finally we came to a clearing where there was a pond and we stopped for a break. In the below photos you can notice how Dee (trainer and owner of Rotti) is taking the opportunity to work her dog on tolerating another dog who is the newest to the hike. She had told me the week prior that her dog is not so fond of the new bees. I was aware of this going on but lucky for me someone on the hike actually captured it. These photos may be from more than one person I am not sure. First sniffing the ground avoiding the whole thing. Look at how big Rocky is. I dont realize he is that big until I see him in p hotos next to big dogs. Maryellen is he that big? Anyway notice how he has his back turned to the the Rotti I turned because Dee was saying "hi Rocky" in a sweet little voice over and over. Then He looks at me For some reason he got up courage to sniff from a distance and that was it but you can see the posture and look change of the Rotti. I also notice how low Rocky's head is. I found all of this very interesting as it is much different to see it in still photos what was just seconds in time. Of things I had not noticed.

Ha! Maybe I should bring Pumpkin. She's actually doing better than expected integrating into the pack, but she actually could use some socializing around people! I was pretty much the only one to handle her at the shelter.

You should do it. Its a great group. People realize not all the dogs are social with dogs and or Humans. It is announced when a newbee attends.

So many groups seem starry eyed about things that I tend to be loathe to want to join in. I'm down south. Let me know if and when you are heading at least as far south as Central Jersey.

I love that everyone is told about all the dog's potential issues and that they are respected! I wish I could do something like this with Chubby (to teach him better manners when around other people and dogs) but we rarely get the chance because either people a) run away with their dogs when they see us or b) know he is sweet but overdo the 'letting dogs be dogs' idea by letting dogs continuously invade each other's space and if you try and gently tell them your dog looks a little stressed maybe its better to give him a break they get a offended.
Rocky is so handsome by the way!!

the hikes are every sunday morning at 10am. dave comes from cranford, carolanne from ny state, and one girl comes from passaic park. they only do sussex county areas as most everyone is from up here though.. the cost is $5 per hike. dee the organizer will give training advise too if needed. if you join the group or come as a guest you can do a nice hike with people who for the most part are not idiots.
Ca if you mean rocky big as in tall, yes he is tall
and john the rottie is also HA, and another smaller dog with the muzzle (brindle furry one) is somewhat HA and DA as well

Yes tall. Seeing him in the photos next to the Rotti I realize how tall he is.

That is really cool seeing the different postures. In the last pic that Rottie really does look like he is ready to go.
Rocky is such a good boy trying not to disturb the peace.

That rottie is a very serious dog. I don't make eye contact with him, and I give him a wide berth. I have not let Sedona approach him, either.

i was able to throw him a treat and let him sniff my hand at one of the walks, he showed interest in me (not in a bad way) and dee took the time to have me toss him some treats. he is really gorgeoius, just really messed up from the abuse he suffered before she got him and genetics didnt help either

At our last hike Dee was encouraging other dogs to get a hello sniff in as they were passing on the hike. That was as close as Rocky was getting and after that last still shot he looked to move out of there. And we did. But although he looks ready to go he made no sounds. Interesting though I remember other dogs ahead making noise as if they were about to go at it. It ended quickly but it gets Rocky all alert and fired up. Wonder if that is why he was feeling like a humpy boy that day. Friggen fool.

Sugar it is possible to get up there by car. If you can pretend Mr Chubs is a service dog the two of you could ride the train into Port Jervis. One of us could pick you up there. Its on the boarder of Sussex. I dont know if there is a train goes up that way to Sussex. But you would have to leave early thats for sure. Unless you camp out up there. LOL

I wasn't inclined to bring Pablo anyway, but that Rottie's presence seals the deal. Those kinds of vibes from a big male dog would put Pablo into a pretty serious mindset of his own and it would be all sorts of unfun to be there with the two of them. I don't think Pumpkin would do much other than just avoid the Rottie of her own accord, which I would of course encourage. She's pretty full of herself, but realistic enough to know when not to mess around.

Here is an interesting twist I thought of. See the mastiff hiding behind Dee and Rotti. Later after Rotti went into car and just about everyone cleared out I was talking with Dee an her husband about natural bug repellent when that mastif got close to Rocky for a sniff. Well the fool who had been acting strange that day with trying to hump Sedona and another small female dog, returns the sniff and tries to hump her, Well he just lifted his front paws and Well she was not having that. She told him off good. Guess he did not get her message that she does not mess around. I was not expecting for him to try it on her. I dont know what that all that trying to hump was all about that day. He is asking for trouble.

Carolann, Winnie is tall too. I really didn't realize it because Mac was a lot bigger than Winnie. Bringing Rhett and Cleveland into the home... and Lilly, really made it apparent that he isn't that stubby.
