Something I have been trying to work on with Cleveland... He is a good one for being pushy, especially when it comes to my attention. When I come home from work, I let the dogs out right away. I sometimes say hello, but I usually try to keep quiet and calm because they are excited enough already. Sometimes I just say outside, but they know what the routine is so they head for the door. Once inside they are ready to say hi to me. I greet each one in turn. When it is Winstons turn, Cleveland buts his fat head in. I've been using the back it up command, and after reading the post on Bola and the wait command, I've started using this term. (just today) No one ever goes without attention! He will do this if I sit on the sofa, he thinks it should be all about him. If I'm just chilling in bed watching tv, he is fine just laying in his spot. Winston joins the bed and then he gets pushy and wants the attention. My usual reaction is to tell him to get off the bed, or I get up and leave. I try not to give in. We have good days, and bad days. Just right now it's really annoying me!
I want to proceed in the right direction. He is a very clever dog, and will get it, just need to figure out the best way!

Maybe it's like people, like any critters...some are just more needy than others heeheehee. I come in at night, take my badge and glasses off in the driveway so no one knocks them off or get tangled in the lanyard...then there's furry bodies on the chair backs, the sofa, the floor, and Ophie plowing right through the middle...then Em pushing them out of the way...it's good to be loved...not so much when you're laying down reading and everyone plays Roll Over until you end up on the floor

Lol! Aww Clevelands like "Wait....Its my turn...and again...and again." lol Bolas a stinker about thinking he needs attention ALL the time (...and my daughter caters to this...Shell sit there and rub his tummy and chest the whole 2 hours when watching a movie) Recently Ive begun teaching him to sit when he wants attention (Cant have a dog trying to climb in my lap when baby comes!!). I ignore him when he 'demands' attention then when Im ready I tell him "Bola sit" and Ill give him affection. Before I was using the 'Go lay down' command with him. Or Id just completly ignore him and turn away (Which usually just made him try harder until I said something). Hes already catching on...When he wants lovins he sits infront of me and stares. lol

Rocky is my pushy dog. When he wants attention, he wants it NOW, Lola be damned. Lola generally is tolreant, but has recently shown signs of wanting to correct Rocky.
What I do is command each of them to come to me, in turn. Lola is dominant, I attend to her first. If Rocky pushes in, he gets a WAIT or EASY command, he knows both of them. If he doesn't listen, he gets pushed away and scolded with a NO. He then waits his turn calmly.
It takes patience, repetition, praise, and they don't get it overnight. As a matter of fact, the pushy ones may never stop trying. The reward (your attention) is so valuable to them, the risk always seems worth ignoring the commands.

Silly Hillary was my attention slut. She'd push to the front whenever anyone came over to visit to hog all the attention. Had to reel her in at some point. But god, was she ever persistent. At least no one was COMPETING with her for attention. Most the dogs I've had liked to make a fuss and be fussed over for maybe 5 minutes and then go back to "normal duties".
Pablo has often been particularly popular with visitors because he is friendly, but generally in a very reserved, polite way and is gentle taking treats, etc. He'll sit at the back of the "dog scrum" and wait his turn. That has always appealed to people, unsurprisingly.
