Hello. I'm new to this forum and to pit bulls. I have a strong desire to own a pit however I have some concerns. I have done my research but some feedback from personal experiences is always sometimes more reassuring because you never know what to believe. I have a 9 year old dachshund, male. He is fairly dominant when around other dogs and gets along with all sizes. I am hoping to adopt a pit mix. 8 month old female who has received and will continue professional training. My question, I fear for my dachshund as pits are dog sensitive. I understand I must keep them apart when unsupervised. But here's my concern, if I'm in the shower for example does pit need to be crated? If I am laying on couch and give both a bone, do I need to fear food aggression and a fight over a bone? I know they will be fed separately. I truly adore this precious girl but I love my doxie deeply. I also don't want to live my life feeling I can't jump in the shower or walk in the other room. Please she'd some light. Thanks!

Hello and welcome! You should get tons of feedback here. Please feel free to ask anything, we are all here to help The quick answers to your questions are, yes you need to seperate when you are not directly there to supervise. Yes, you should feed bones seperately (crate one or both dogs). Yes, you need to worry about possible fights. Since your current dog is already bossy, I do worry about bringing in a dog-sensitive breed like a Pit Bull. Especially because even a very quick fight could mean extreme damage or death to your little guy. I would STRONGLY recommend a fully mature female (3+) who has been living in a foster setting with another dog. Please do not get a puppy or young adult - you have no idea how the dog will mature in terms of temperament with other animals; you will also be bringing a dog in around the worst time in terms of development, when the dog is maturing and testing their limits with everything, getting pushy with other dogs, and picking fights. Hello and Welcome aboard! I think it is great that you are trying to do your homework on the breed!
I too agree with everything Mary said.

Welcome aboard! I think Mary gave some great advice! Check Petfinder and Adoptapet for a mature female that has lived with dogs and I think you will be very happy with her!

Welcome to the forum! Ditto to everything Mary (Real Pit Bull) said. It's great that you want to bring another rescued friend into your home, and there is so much to consider before making your decision. Seems like you definitely want to do this right rather than jumping first and thinking later, so kudos to you!

I really appreciate everyone's feedback. I originally was looking at a three year old male pit but some lucky soul beat me to him. I am going to take everyone's advise and search for an older pit. I have done a lot of research and seems to be the right thing to do for my dachshund. All my best to everyone and I will keep you posted!!!
