Just curious if anyone here has had any experience with it.
Thanks!

What is it? The vet recently put Aiden on prozac for his aggression. Is it something similar?

I've used 5HTP for myself! LOL Never really been impressed by it. I was curious to try it on my AmStaff, but never made the leap. IME these herbal/natural remedies can possibly give you a small boost towards your goal, or make behavior modification easier, but if you're expecting anything dramatic, don't bother.
What book recommended it, Jessica?
Val, 5HTP works on neurotransmitters that control serotonin. Prozac is an SSRI and also works on regulating serotonin. So in that way, the two are similar. But 5HTP is an over the counter remedy. I'm sure if you do a Google search you'll pull up lots of information.

James O'Heare talks about it in the Dog Aggression Workbook...I haven't heard it mentioned anywhere else, it's also discussed on one of his yahoogroups as well.

I am SO against medicating animals, and I have learned that 50% of the US population has been "treated" with meds for some illness or abnormality (which makes me think that there really is no abnormality if half of us have it). The pharmaceutical companies are pumping out new meds every day, without doing the years of research needed to ensure no short or long term side effects. Once we begin to screw with the brain, that is trouble. I don't doubt that we will see years down the road, in humans, MANY new neurological issues in people given these psychotropic meds. I wholeheartedly disagree with trying to change anyone, human or canine, this way, not only because it frightens me, but because it has been proven time and time again that so many meds were allowed to be put on the market, and THEN the company realized that there were problems. This is America and I would never criticize anyone for their choice, especially b/c I can't experience their life, but I would urge ANYONE to consider all types of working with their dog, and failing that, consider that this is just how your dog is and work around it, before the chemical fix!

5HTP isn't a drug. Valliesong's dog is on Prozac as a last resort.
Although in general I agree that behavioral drugs aren't always or even usually not the best course of action, they CAN have thier puposes and place to help with behavior modification and save a dog's life. Sometimes it's all we've got.
I'll add, however, that behavior modifying drugs are virtually worthless without a sound behavior modification protocol in place.

My Yogie is a perfect canine citizen at home and in the yard but sigh sigh hes a monster in the car, he rides in the front passenger seat with me and my little one, barks up a storm etc but only mostyy to me as when I get out of the car to stop at the store for a moment he barks loudly until im out of Focus and then upon returning to the car in view of yogie, he starts barking, roughly at me ,,, I think it is an anxiety disorder and Im wondering if prozac would work on him unless there is some type of info and training on this subject before turning to issue

Thank you, Mary. Aiden is on Prozac as a last resort in our hopes to avoid euthanasia. He is also going through training and desensitization, so hopefully the medication is only temporary. But if the medication keeps him safe and gives him a life he wouldn't be able to have without it, I will keep him on it.
For anxiety, I give my dog Roscoe the herb valerian for thunderstorms and fireworks.
I borrowed a book from the library on reactive dogs that would probably help a lot with the car problem: "Scaredy Dog! Understanding and Rehabilitating Your Reactive Dog" by Ali Brown
