Because Lincoln will not eat treats outside it has made training a bit difficult for me. I have tried using a toy instead but he is not all that concerned with it. Being a pup he loves to sniff around and taste EVERYTHING. I have tried different treats and none have taken to him outside and I am trying to convert what he has learned inside to an outside environment. I am considering trying cold-cuts like turkey because I know he absolutely loves it. Would anyone advise against using this as a treat source? I will not be giving him large quantities but need to find something enticing for him. Also he liked this dry-chicken which was almost chalk-like but we ran out and he also began to lose interest in it outside. What would you guys and gals suggest? Some new goodies for everyone;

When I started clicker training Chubby I used cooked hotdog bits (worked well, but eviiiiil farts!!) and I used cold-cuts too. Just try to get the low-sodium kind. Personally I think its ok, because its not a rest-of-the life kind of thing, just a training aid.

You can try cooked chicken breasts cut up into small pieces, also cheese and as Sugar said cooked hot dog bits.

What sort of treats are you using?
Probably need higher value like hotdogs, cooked garlic liver, cheese, peanut butter (on a wooden spoon). Boiled chicken is my go-to.
Also, at his age, the world outside is pretty much going to be the most exciting thing ever. Try to take him to very low-key outdoor areas to start off with, and very short training sessions. If you are having trouble with him sniffing everything start him on some boring pavement. Also, you can use the environment as a reward (ie. he sits, then he gets to go sniff something interesting).

Thanks for the edibles tips. I will try some hot-dogs and chicken. Cooked but not hot of course.
Sugar, I remember the exact day he started to let em rip...He has stinky ones! Michele I did try cheese but he wasn't a fan of it...Weird right? I think hot-dogs would do.
Mary I tried the bil-jacs liver treats which he loves but they don't work outside. I like the idea of him sniffing as a reward I just feel like he won't consider it as one, like he gets to do it anyway. I try to limit his free-reign no matter where we are but I never had success with that and my other dogs.
I like the pavement idea as well, will definitely try that.
And he doesn't like peanut-butter much which is crazy. I eat it 5 times a day as part of my weight program and he comes to sniff but doesn't want it. I rubbed some on his tongue one day lol wish I had a camera rolling there.
Thanks!

Drew, I'm talking about real liver that you would cook/prepare at home. For a lot of dogs, store-bought, premade treats just don't do the trick.
Also, sniffing and the opportunity to move around/explore work great as rewards for many dogs, especially dogs that have a difficult time concentrating or aren't all that food motivated. Lincoln works for treats even though he still gets full meals served to him several times a day, right? ;-)

That's a great point, my apprehension comes from his potential inability to consider it as a reward. Or I should say my inability to make it a reward. When we go walking I reward him with a release ("okay") every minute or so and he usually wants to keep walking....Then I want to walk and he wants to sniff. I understand what you are saying though. I will keep at it. He IS beginning to understand "okay" as the release in the entirety of its meaning. As far as Liver goes....Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Haha Not sure I can cook that! I am squeemish!

Whatever you use, try to make them super special outside only treats (that way there is less of a chance he will get bored with them)

I used shoprite frozen meatballs. But I have been told that onion and garlic can be toxic and both garlic and onion powder are in the ingredients. But must need large quantities to be toxic. Also cat treats were a favorite for rocky sometimes I used those. My trainer used a meat you can find in the fresh dog food isle in the supermarket or pet store. It came in a tube. Like hamburger meat. Hotdogs are a good one. Too bad he does not like cheese cause string cheese works good. One of ROckys ultimate favorites is Cheese Doodles. It is one of my emergency recall words. If he wont come in I can say Cheese doodle and he comes running. But since I rarely have them available I just say want a cheesy Biscuit and that does it. Oh and the sound of the whip cream cap coming off is enough to get him out of a dead sleep and at your feet without saying a word. Oh and maybe not feed him before going out to do training so this way he is nice and hungry.

Thanks for the tips. His meals follow the training sessions at least when he is due for one. Sounds like being creative would pay off, maybe I will get some 'sample' sizes of different things and see which works. Cheese doodles is great cuz I can eat em too! Lol@whip cream I would LOOVEE to see your pup do that I think it would be a riot. I just don't know if I can do liver. Ever since I saw my uncle eat it as a young kid(when I tried it and upchucked) I haven't been able to even say the word! lol
I am very appreciative for the help. I will do a little shopping tomorrow morning and do some training and let you know how it goes. Emily that seems expensive for a pound its 67bucks, it must be one hella-good treat!

Wow Fur, I didn't think I would have company in this little predicament. Glad to know I am not alone, still there is hope for me yet.

So we started with some turkey cold-cuts today and went out onto the beach and Lincoln ate every single one! Woohoo! Lets hope he continues to. I was able to begin the first phase of his "heel" training as well as reinforcing his "come" a bit though it is going to need a lot of work. It was a busy day so I didn't make it to the supermarket I just stopped at the Deli...I have been CRAVING cheese-doodles since someone had to bring them up yesterday! lol ;o)
