In doing my research for my training lecture, I came across many videos and lessons on loose leash walking. So I went out with Rocky to give it a try. That as when I realized Rocky has learned heal means-walk faster get to end of lead when I feel tension stop dead look at mom and walk backwards into line. Expect treat for doing so.
So what I did was (BTW I lost my clicker) while leash was loose with a nice J leash practically dragging on ground. I continually Yes treat Yes treat after about ten repetitions of that then changed word from Heal to loose leash.
So realized back in the day in beyond basic what I taught Rocky. Since I had first gone to a jack arse trainer before clicker training Rocky knew heal but he also knew it with a different type of collar. So I still used the word heal.
So here is what happened. I say line up. He gets to my left. I say heal and there is no collar check when he gets to far because now we are in a clicker class. He gets to end of leash. I stop walking. He stops walking. He looks at me waits for me to catch up and gets a treat. I dont remember when we clicked with that. But over time in training him we never got beyond that. Of course he does not pull horrible and he knows when he is working ie. tdi test and cgc he walked nice. But out on a walk through the neighborhood for miles he walks quickly ahead gets to end of 4-5 ft lead and stops looks at me sides steps back in line sometimes sits. Gets a treat. I cant believe it took me 6 years to figure out that it was my doing and not his. DUH.
