I hope you guys can follow this link and see this thread. It's about someone's livestock guardian dog killing chickens, and the replies about how to stop the dog. You'll know exactly why I'm freaking out in just a minute... www.backyardherds.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=15398Maybe I'm the crazy one here, but is that truly how you train a LGD? It sounds like Cesar's BS x10!

A puppy. A 5 month old puppy!! How does it help in the task of guarding livestock to make the dog petrified of chickens??? How do you prevent that fear from transferring onto the things the dog is supposed to be guarding against??? That is one of the most disgusting things I've read in a while!

Apparently, she does the same to a wether (neutered goat) when he bullies her. She knocks him to the ground, lays on him, and starts smacking and yelling at him.
Yes, you do need to stand up to livestock, but that is too far. Standing your ground or charging back at them gets the point across just the same.

Standing up to animals doesn't mean you need to knock them down, let alone knock them silly. If nothing else, doing the latter is dangerous and I question the sanity of anyone who wants to get into a knock down drag out with a terrier OR a goat! I do have to say, however, that when you are talking about animals killing your other animals, we are no longer talking about teaching sit stays and I'd be utterly loathe to say that all aversives are out of bounds here. P+ means stimuli that tend to diminish or extinguish a given behavior. Extinguishing a behavior is exactly what you want to do here, though I must also say that allowing a friggin' terrier to run with your chickens is stupid human behavior likely more easily cured by kicking your own stupid self in the @$$ than suppressing the small animal prey drive in a terrier will ever be!

I wish I could say this sort of thing surprises me, but people do some real shitty things to dogs in the name of training. Makes me very sad for dogs. So, so sad.
