Hopefully sometime in 2012 the Odnarb family will be adding a puppy. It's been so long since I've had a puppy, and this puppy will have a different purpose (family dog & obedience) in mind from the last one (French Ring). Since Puppy Odnarb isn't likely to appear until later in the year, I have time to read a ton and refresh my memory before some needle toothed little maniac is unleashed on the family.
So, what are your favorites? Believe it or not, this dog nerd librarian has not read a lot of dog training books.

Paul Owens the Dog Whisperer has a Puppy Whisperer book. Have not read it but just bought the other 2 books on Amazon for 5.00 each. Which I will likely donate copies to my library. www.raisewithpraise.com/Books.htm I like what I see in the Paul Owens books I have no idea what is in puppy book. Above link also gives free video clips.

I LOVE "Get Connected" by Brenda Aloff. All her books are awesome (especially her body language one) but this one has some great training stuff in it. It also comes with a DVD, and she is working with a puppy in the DVD. Her basic obedience DVD (can't remember what it's called - Fundamentals maybe?) is also really excellent.

Also, you cannot post to a bunch of dog nuts that you're getting a puppy but not say what BREED!!! I'm assuming another Mal? Probably not another Malinois, but don't count them out. My husband and Harry went together like gasoline and a blow torch, and he holds Harry against the entire breed. I have a deposit down on a GSD litter that I really like. She would have been due at the end of this month but the breeding didn't take. It was an AI breeding. She's going to try again in the spring with a younger, closer dog that she can get a natural breeding from. This stud doesn't have the accomplishments that the first dog did, but he is titled and I personally think he's put together better. The health testing history in his pedigree is better, too. I'm quite pleased with the switch. Both parents are roughly 1/2 West German Working and 1/2 DDR. I'm not set on GSDs, but I really liked these particular dogs. If litter #2 doesn't happen I don't know that I'll look for other GSDs. Then I might go for a Dutch or tell my husband to shove it and get another Malinois I also have a terrible want for a Standard Xolo, but the husband hates hairless pets. If I make him pick between a Xolo and a Malinois, I don't know what he would do!

I love GSDs and if you found a good breeder with the right dogs, could be the best choice ever.
Also, Dutch Shepherds are rad, and Xolos are awesome too!

In my head I think that a quality GSD is just what I'm looking for. This is the litter we put a deposit down on... www.vomwennerhaus.com/PBCeylaBuzz.htmI was hesitant to go for a GSD at first. I do like them, but I'm a Malinois girl at heart. This breeder is near us, though, and my husband really liked that that the mother and grandfather were both certified through TDI, and that everybody is titled. He was tired of me looking at tons of breeders and coming home disappointed after evaluating various shelter dogs, so he told me to just go with this one and stop freaking out until we know that there are no puppies. Like I said, first litter didn't take. So we will just sit and wait for the next try. If that one doesn't take, we will go back to the drawing board. In the meantime, I still keep my eye out for rescues in the area. I have friends at the local shelter who have my shopping list of what I'm looking for and they let me come poke and prod the ones that they think I might like before they officially go up for adoption. It's hard with a small child. A lot of the dogs that I really like are ones that I don't feel comfortable bringing home to her. The right dog will come along when he comes along, I guess. The house is horribly empty without an obnoxious sheepdog, though.
