OK - you guys are killing me showing off all of your cool new collars - I want to get one for Lily!!! So, if you can give me an idea about what size and type to order for her (I know I will have to replace it within months becuase she will grow) so she will have an awesome collar and leash set when she comes home - I would really appreciate it.

if you get an adjustable collar she can grow into it..adjustables are awesome for growing pups, as you can get a ton of use out of them since they adjust to her growing.. you can do a martinggale so she cant slip out. normally pups are around 8-11 inches for collars, but you will need to measure her neck once she gets home..

Hi Andrea! Lily will grow by leaps and bounds the first year, especially in the early months so just start with regular nylon collars. Just a suggestion: KEEP the first collar you buy her that she wears and take pictures of her in it and keep it. You'll be amazed when she's grown that such a tiny thing ever fit her. Take pictures of her in her first collar as a reminder that she was, once a baby. You probably shouldn't spend much money on collars for her early on as she will outgrow them left and right. Simple, adjustable collars, as Mary Ellen suggested will be fine. No choke chains! And be careful with tags attached, puppies are notorious for getting themselves into things and tags may become caught or entangled which can pose a serious problem. Always supervise her if she's wearing tags. I no longer attach tags to my dogs collar rings with the S-hooks or keyrings, instead I use tag keepers, attach all their tags to that and clip it onto their collars when we go out. www.trendyhounds.com sells tag keepers for a buck.

Thank you!! I am going to go look at the tag keepers - sounds like a great idea. ME - thanks for the idea on the martingale - I remember how my dane used to slip out of her regular collar - I will am definately going to look into those!! Sounds much better than "chase the puppy"..

you are welcome, once she stops growing you can then buy a nice collar from trendyhounds, but with her being a pup she is going to grow like a weed, and for cost it might be better to wait a bit until she stops growing. i have rubys baby collar and omg its soooo small, she was 16 lbs when i got her and her collar size must have been a 7 now when i look at it its like an anklet bracelet LOL instead of a neck collar..

LOL - Lily is up to 4 pounds already - is that fat or what?? Would the martingale collar be the ideal collar for training??

the martinggale is perfect for training too as the dog cant slip out of it, and its better then a choke or prong collar too.. i like them because the dog cant back out of it and it loosens up once the dog stops pulling.
4 lbs? how old is she now, 3 weeks?? if that is the case, then by 8 weeks she should be around 8-10 lbs depending on how much she eats LOL..
i also have the tag hooks too they are a DREAM.. you just unhook it from the collar ring and put it on the new collar, its easy to switch collars, you dont have to do much work to unhook a D ring anymore with the tag hooks..

I have had Lucy since she was 8 weeks (I think) and she is on her 3rd collar now. The first one I bought her was a Lupine size small adjustable collar and it lasted a bit, then she went to a planet dog hemp adjustable med and now she has a collarmania collar at 10 months old. I had her make it so she wears in on the smallest hole now in case she grows a bit more, who knows if she will she has stopped growing over the past month is seems but I'm sure she will go through another spurt. Depending on her size I'm guessing you will probably have to go through 2-3 collars before you get ones she will keep for more than a few months.

I've always waited for my dogs to be full grown before I spend big bucks on a collar, but that's just me. I agree a nice adjustable collar, simple and straight forward, is the best bet while they are growing. I love martingales, too, for training/walking - not as tag collars/stay-on collars (I always take the martingale off with the leash).

I usually don't have mine wear collars if we are in the house. The collar is something that normally goes on before we hit the door and comes back off on the way back in. LOL - don't wants my girls to have "collar neck"..

LOL - I came up with "Collar Neck" after Ray picked on Sam (my great dane) and then took off his hat and had "Hat Head".

I also don't like animals wearing collars in the house, but recently started keeping one on all the time, b/c of tags in case she gets loose. I try to make her confident and keep her off leash as much as possible, and she has never taken off when the door has been opened or she can push through it, but you can't be too careful.

I leave my dog's collar on indoors during the day, especially since I live in an apartment and when I'm not home or at work, I like him to have some kind of ID on (on the off chance my landlord or emergency workers, etc had to get inside). At night, the collar comes off.

I always have collars on my dogs, except Aiden, who always wear his harness. (He has degenerative disc disease.) Even my cats all wear collars. I refuse to have any of my animals without ID, just in case.
