Next Thursday Lucy will no longer be a fertile dog. I made the appointment to get her spayed! I'm really excited. I was nervous because they told me I had to make it 2 weeks in advance, and I didn't want her to be recovering when my mom came down to visit, but I got one early enough so she should be all healed up and ready to play! I think she is excited, I keep telling her she is going to loose her noodles on Thursday and she wags her tail. My little girl's first (hopefully only) operation!
The only problem I have is I wanted to get her kennel cough shot done before hand but she said it takes 2 weeks to be active and it is only one week until the appointment. So, I have to worry about kennel cough now. But, at least I don't have to worry about unwanted puppies or putting diapers on my dog!

Aww, Lucy girl! I'll keep my fingers crossed that kennel cough isn't a problem for her.

Well I just dropped her off. She was so sad! What am I gonna do without my little Lu to hang out with all day!?!?! Do you guys think I should get a cone collar when she comes back home? She will be supervised, but obviously not when I am asleep. I didn't need one for my last dog, but he was a boy. It could be more dangerous for her if she pulls a stitch out probably right? I miss my Lu already She is probably so confused, she's never stayed away from home without me or someone she knows and trusts.

Oh boy, I SO know what you are going through! Separation anxiety!!
I would definitely get an Elizabethan (cone) collar - better to have one and not need it than the other way around. Keep it on her when you aren't there to supervise (i.e. at night) until you are sure she's not going to touch those stitches.

They have these new ones now (examples): petprojectblog.com/archives/general/alternative-to-elizabethan-collar/www.entirelypets.com/bitefreecol.htmlI've seen one in use on a Rhody who had to have her tail docked due to an injury. Dog looked stupid as all get out and her ability to communicate through total body language was a bit limited but the other dogs just looked at her as they would have with a regular shock collar banging into everything. She appeared *much* more comfortable compared to every other dog I have seen in a traditional cone type collar.

I like the diagram in the first one....in case you didn't understand the point of the alternative collar LOL I agree though, looks like a great alternative.

LOL, I was going to modify the post above b/c I typed "shock" collar in place of "e-collar"...boy that positive training commitment runs deep, call it what it is! Sorry, I tickled myself.

She's home! she feels so bad though! She's sleeping it off on the couch on her blanket. They told me she was in fact, still in heat so no boyfriends for 2 weeks. she had to also get staples. She hasn't tried to lick it at all, but she was licking other places. She is REALLY stinky. I am not sure what it is, she had some poop stuck under her tail so maybe that's it. I just hope she recovers well, I am so worried right now

She will be FINE. It's so hard seeing them right after surgery (I know that stinky surgery smell, well!), but in a couple days she will be back to her old self. No worries!!! *Hugs* to you both!

She is eating and drinking and seems a lot better now. She was even chewing her nylabone. I spent a lot of time today sitting on the couch with her watching movies because she whined everytime I wasn't touching her lol. I am such a sucker. Hopefully she doesn't try to sneak up on the bed tonight. I think it is too high for her to comfortably get down, plus she stinks! Thanks for the support, I know I am overreacting, but I hate seeing her in pain.

Poor stinky Lucy. When can you give her a bath and get her smelly good again?

Thank you. she is so much better today and still not even attempting to lick her incision. She was acting like her normal self today minus the running around and playing. I am finding ways to keep her mentally stimulated w/o her having to move about, she is doing well with it. She smells much better now too hehe. I gave in and let her on the bed last night.
