I really need advice. Today, I stepped outside to tie Marley out to go potty. I heard a man’s voice which is odd considering I live in the middle of nowhere and my closest neighbor is miles away. I looked up and through the trees I noticed a vehicle. I started walking a little closer to the vehicle (I was still far away but I was trying to see what was going on) and I saw a man look up and take off to his truck. The truck sped past our house and right behind the truck ran a brindle Pit Bull. We were un able to get a license plate number…All we know is that it is an old single cab brown colored pickup truck. Gustavo Avery and I hurried up and took off down the road in my car to try to find out where the dog went and about a mile away from my house by a bridge the dog was standing in the ditch exhausted. I had some Goldfish crackers in my car and slowly tried approaching it but about the time the dog realized I wasn’t the person it was waiting for it put its tail between its legs and ran away. I keeps returning back to the bridge but will not let us get near it. I have called the Sheriffs office but there is not much they can do because we didn’t get a plate number and the dog will not come up to them either. I don’t want this dog to starve to death. The dog is wearing a red collar and looks like it might be mixed with a German Sheppard (Coloring) but it looks mostly Pit Bull. It runs as soon as you open your car door but just looks at you when you stop your car…Last time we went I ever had my window down but as soon as I even moved my hand (Trying to throw food out) it took off. I don’t know if there is anything I can do for this dog but any ideas are appreciated. I just don’t think this dog is going to come to anyone…He/she is waiting for its people. This entire situation is bothering me SO much! Can you imagine pushing your dog out your car door then watch your dog chase you for over a mile and try to get away and abandon it?!? What sickos. Gustavo and I have already discussed what we would do if we could get our hands on the b*stard. Anyway...Any thoughts or ideas we'd appreciate!

Can you borrow a live/humane dog trap from somewhere?

I have no idea where I would get one...Maybe I will try calling our DNR tomorrow and see if they have any that they would let me borrow or rent.
If nothing else-My dad is very creative...Maybe him and Gustavo could put something together.

poor dog. Valliesong is on the right track, a live trap might work, so long as you don't trap something unwanted!

It is bothering me really bad. I would never be able to do rescue work and deal with this stuff daily. My heart keeps breaking every time I think of him chasing that truck. I just wish I could tell this dog that I want to help it and that its owner is not coming back. I am so worried that something is going to happen to it! I really hope a trap works (I will get my hands on one, one way or another)...He/She doesnt seem hungry now (Which isnt suprising-it was just dumped today and I have put a ton of dog food down for it) so I am going to have to cut back on dumping food in order to actually catch the dog using food.

I seriously hate people. I don't know what else to suggest. That poor pittie on the Eisenhower Expressway here in Chicago a couple weeks ago ran away from everyone for two days. A police officer finally got lucky and was able to snatch him. I hope you'll be able to find a solution along the lines of what Val suggested. All the strays I've ever come across were more than happy to come get some food, but it sounds like that might not work. Maybe a nice meaty smelly steak? ???

At this time of night, maybe just leave out some dog food in hopes that he'll at least have something to eat. It sounds like such a bad situation That poor dog....he must be so afraid and confused.

That is so sad but again sounds like you are meant to be a dog rescue. You have the property and the dogs come to you. Maybe that is how Marley ended up with you. Someone dumped him. Even though that guy is a disgusting man fate still directed him near your property. Wow this is amazing. I hope you have success. I think the idea of leaving food and water out is great, but by me I would catch a bear! since you said you were tying out Marley to potty I am guessing you dont have a fenced area then to try to catch him in. Maybe you can get a roll of that green garden fence and some steaks and make a make shift pen put food water and make a little shelter possibly he will eventually go in and you can close it off maybe even put something across top so he cant jump out. That is what I used to fence a small area when I first got Rocky I later used it around the perimiter of my entire property. It was cheap, effective, can barely be seen when leaves on trees and shrubs and best of all easy to install quickly. I was not even there and the image of this dog running behind the vehicle is running through my head. poor boy.

So this morning the dog was laying asleep in our driveway. As soon as I opened the house door he/she took off and didnt return til sundown. Carolann-We dont have any of our yard fenced in and even if we did I dont think Id be able to beat this dog to any gate or enterance...He/She is really fast. I called our DNR office and left a message, no one will hear it until Monday...So as of now I think Im doing all that I can do. We have our share of 'drop offs' and I would love to run a rescue but the thing is that there are TONS of unwanted dogs and no homes. Right now the best I can do is try to help the ones that 'come to me' and to keep my animals fixed and fix any dog or cat I can get my hands on. Do dogs that get dumped typically stay in the area that they get dumped? I am so afraid of her disappearing. Tomorrow I am going to be home all day so I think I am going to keep one of our buidings' door open tonight and put some strong smelling food and a bowl of water in there and try trapping him/her in there. Its about the best I can do until Monday.

Good luck. If you keep supplying food he/she will likely keep coming back.

Oh my god. POOR DOG. The first dog my family ever owned was picked up by my uncle when he saw some guy dumping him from a car, very similar type situation. It really is soooo sad, now I'm going to be thinking about this dog all night, too. Please keep trying, leave food out, try to get your hands on a humane trap. This dog needs you

I am going to do everything possible!!! Im not even kidding- I was SO upset as soon as I realized what the guy was doing but when I first got a good look at the dog and realized it was a Pit Bull, I started bauling. Gustavo and I were talking about it-Labs and hunting dogs are very common around here but out of all the dog breeds and all the farm houses a Pit Bull gets dumped at OUR house.

They really must.
Well, my building idea has not worked so far. S/He was lying in the driveway again. The food I had left in the building was gone and you could tell by the chunks of food floating in the water that the water had been drunk.
Today when I noticed him/her lying in the driveway I completely ignored him/her (Didn’t look at, talk or acknowledge) and h/she just laid there and watched me. S/He hasn’t left the yard today. When I go outside s/he hides behind a building or goes a little bit into the timber (Not out of sight), so I am hoping that s/he is beginning to trust.
I am also starting to believe that this is a girl because I see nothing hanging. I haven’t gotten a good look but I cannot see anything from the windows when h/she runs or moves.
I got a better look at him/her (Through the window) and I think there might be a tag on the collar. Would someone REALLY dump a dog with the tag still on the collar??? Maybe I spooked them off before they had a chance to remove the collar?!

Yeah they would a neighbor of mine dumped a dog I found this out after she told me she thought the dog was stolen about a month later she told me the dog was found. Mind you she had told me once before she paid 1500 for this dog. Anyway people contact her from another state they found her dog. The family said their son has fallen in love with the dog and will be sad to see him go. So she told them they could keep the dog. She said I could not take him away from the child. I was like confused. Later found out after they abandoned their cars and home that they drove for hours and left the dog.

I just cant imagine doing such a thing to any dog. Around 4-ish the dog ran off again-Gustavo had to work on a lawn mower and it freaked her out. Then about an hour later my parents came over to have a BBQ and they brought their herd (2 lab mixes and a Cocker) and they ran around the yard with Marley. Now she (It is definitely a she) is cautiously sniffing around the yard right now. She got pretty close to the house to sniff a toy that they played with. I could tell she was definitely a girl and she does have a tag on her collar. Her nipples are very swollen so I hope she isn’t prego or in heat. Now that she is coming closer to the house I am going to try to get some pics for you guys.
