I'm getting married next year and I'm looking into a photographer, however, I have to admit I was a little at how much it costs. Now, to me the photos and video are close to the most important parts of the wedding. I see it as the only thing (outside of the marriage itself) that'll last longer than that day, and I feel like you get what you pay for. So I've been doing some research online and I've seen the average to be around $2000 - $3000, and I was wondering if that was about right?

Too bad Mike doesn't live in the area...but yup that's the average for North Jersey (1500-2000) but there are photographers that will let you choose a la carte. So you can maybe choose a smaller more economical group of formal pics then have folks at the wedding take lots of informal snaps.

Something to consider too... it's been almost twenty five years since we got married, but really... you want a formal portrait for you, and smaller prints for parents n siblings. But in twenty or thirty years you'll definitely remember the candids, who the guests were, the honeymoon...that's the important stuff. spending oodles on extras and flowers, the reception, color coordinated almonds, is goofy, the flowers wilt and you won't remember what salad they had at dinner...

Everyone at my wedding remembers that I got smashed and was dancing by myself. ;D And my ex-wife remembers that she caught me smoking a joint outside with my office mate (who was very pretty, BTW... ) Ah, the memories...

I enjoy weddings but not really into being a bridesmaid.
At the end of the day Kevin all about what is important to you and the fiance regardless of what anyone says. Pictures for my husband and I were not so important. We did get the standard album for ourselves, his parents and my parents. We were also lucky that we got boxes and boxes of proofs from the photographer that were in essence candids. The good thing was that they did not say PROOF all over them so they were just like regular pics. I enjoyed the video much more than pouring over all the pictures.

Just giggling over the highlights I remember... one of hubby's friends getting busted in the parking lot during the reception...were you there too Dave? ...and his Mom circulating among the guests trying to find a good bailbondsman... ...someone else on hubby's side who was well into her cups and kept shouting above the music "I caaaannn't find my bottle, wheeeerrre's my bottle..." Oy, wasn't that a time...

dave - LMAO....that's great! @michele - You're right I think I will just look around and see what is the best quality/price ratio and go with them. maryellen - If it was $2500 then, I guess the prices now are pretty reasonably. @marc - That was my idea (minus the iPhone, Android for me....lol) fureverywhere - That sounds like my kinda party! haha

what you need to do is see /view the different pics/videos of the prospective people you think you might use.. this way you can both see exactly what you will be getting, so that you are not surprised. make sure they are also not involved in any lawsuits for bad services as if they are bad you wont get your money back and you wont have those special pictures either.. so be very picky about who you use.. reputable places wont ask you for the fullpayment up front now, anyone who does be very leery of giving full payment a year in advance....
the price is very reasonable if they are quoting you 2500 just make sure what it includes , how many proofs, etc, videos, etc....

Like ME said get everything in writing like how many pics are included in your album and also the different prices for the albums themselves as i remember they were all different prices depending on what u pick whether it be leather or a coffee table type book. It is insane what u can pay for pics.
