Bola is doing great! He is such an amazing addition to our family...Weve had no big issues with him what so ever. I only have one concern with him at this point.... He is not gaining any weight. He is eating about as much as Honey (Who is a mastiff) and looks so skinny. They are being fed Canidae. His Ribs are countable and hips are sticking out. Hes been dewormed, vaccinated, had the whole works. This scares the sh*t outta me because this is how my Marley boy was (Except Marley would also drink water like no other), would never gain weight, and it ended up being kidney and liver troubles. Is it time for a vet visit or do I give him more time?!

Good question... lol...
Just barely over a month. We brought him home Sept. 10th.

Hmmm. My best frame of reference is probably Dharma. It took her about 1 1/2 months to start putting on noticeable weight. She was about 29 lbs when we brought her home at the end of October, and was up to 36 lbs by Christmas. She's about 42 lbs now, which is just right for her. But to keep her at that weight we have to feed her as much food as Barley and Lebowski, who are in the 75-80 lb range. She has a crazy metabolism.
Unless you notice any other symptoms, I would probably wait a couple weeks on a vet visit. He might be gaining some weight, but not so you can actually notice it.

Ok...That makes me feel better!!
Its so easy to start worrying and thinking the worst!
He weighs about 60 pounds now...Im going to start monitoring his weight to make sure it starts going up a little.
I always tell Kris, it looks like we love one of our dogs and hate the other. Honey has a little pot belly and Bola looks like a skeleton. Its embarrassing....

Search "satin balls recipe" (I know, don't laugh at the name) and make some of those for him. They are good for putting weight on.
His stools and everything else have been normal, right?

sometimes canidae isnt good for some dogs and they cant gain weight on it.. its rare, but some dogs just dont do good on it. like others said add satin balls, and try to change food if you can, or it might take a few more months before he starts to fill out

you can try merrick, wellness, Natural Balance, Fromm, TOTW , its either the canidae isnt working or he just needs more time to gain some weight. i would try the satin balls with the canidae to start, then once he gains weight with the satin balls once you take him off them then try just the canidae alone and if he keeps his weight on then it was just that he needed more time on the canidae.
which canidae is he on? they make a grain free and a regular one... maybe switch to a different flavor and try that or if he is on their grain free switch him to the regular canidae..

The bag says Canidae pure elements. Its the grain free.
Alright, Im either going to try Taste of the Wild or another Canidae formula. (Im iffy about putting on a formula with grain because Im afraid that could have been part of his skin allergies when I adopted him)

i would try another canidae first, just to make sure.. his skin issues could have been just from neglect from the old owner.. then if that doesnt work then try TOTW , merrick makes a grain free called Before Grain, i feed it to rufus and sadie and its a good food..

merrick before grain has chicken, pork, salmon, and i think one or two more.. its a good food, and you can get 1 lb sample bags from most pet stores to try it out before buying a big bag

Ive never tried Merrick. Should I just say to hell with Canidae and buy some small bags of Merrick and try gradually switching him?!

no try the satin balls with the canidae first, this way if its just that it takes him longer to gain weight you dont want to switch. is he doing good otherwise on the canidae? if he is doing good on the canidae just leave it be, if it aint broke dont fix it ... you only had him for a month, and you really want to SLOWLY have him gain weight.. not fast.. put up some pics of him top and side so we can see how skinny he is..

You can add a little canned pumpkin not too much though.
