Dharma had emergency surgery last night and is now home recovering. We noticed earlier in the evening that she was lethargic and "out of it." Abdominal spasms, very pale gums. Called our vet's ER line, said to bring her in. SO glad our vet does his own emergency calls. Long story short, evidence of internal bleeding and she was in surgery within the hour. Concern was cancerous mass, but good news, it was a hematoma on the spleen. Both were removed. She lost A LOT of blood. We were in surgery with her the whole time, which was rough but reassuring. This poor dog has been through too much. I'm relieved that we caught it quickly and that it was not a worse diagnosis. Yet another example of how following my gut with my dogs has saved their life.

I'm trying to help someone get a pit mix out of Florida to a waiting adopter here in Illinois. The dog is in Fort Myers FL. We already have the legs between Atlanta and Chicago taken care of. So we need volunteers for the following segments: Fort Myers, FL - Gainesville, FL - Atlanta, GA. The longest stretch is Gainesville to Atlanta, at almost 5 hours. So there may need to be a stop added in between. Bama Bully Rescue has kindly posted this on their cross posting page. If you or anyone you know might be able to help please message me. Thanks!

Halo!!!! Oh my gosh I love seeing this update on her! She looks beautiful. Allergies suck. Otis also has a white coat and pink skin, and his allergies are awful. Certain foods, certain chemicals, environmental stuff. He has to get steroid shots at least a couple times every spring because of hives and wheezing. So glad to see you back on RPBF Susan and I hope you'll post more Halo pics!

We've had 8 inches since last night, blizzard conditions announced for this afternoon, and at least another 6 inches expected by midnight tonight. And my husband is still going in to work today.

Sounds like you're off to a great start with Diamond's training. She's quite lucky to have been adopted by a family so eager and willing to work on her behavior issues in such a positive way!

Oh yeah, definitely get On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals. It's a great introduction to reading and understanding what your dog is communicating, and what you are (usually unknowingly) communicating to your dog. When I was more active in rescue volunteering, I always recommended it to fosters and adopters. It's very good for "beginners" and a good foundation for moving forward with BAT or other positive conditioning/training.

Poor Diamond! I know how stressful and worrisome it can be to have a highly reactive and/or anxious dog. Certain triggers can send them into a seemingly uncontrollable spiral, and they may even harm themselves. It's tough to watch and not know how to help. I'm so glad to hear that you want to use only positive training techniques! There are many threads in the behavior & training section of the forum that would be helpful to your situation. Several of us have dealt with similar issues with our dogs. I think BAT Behavior Adjustment Training is a good place to start. A great book that I know has been mentioned in other threads is Behavior Adjustment Training: BAT for Fear, Frustration, and Aggression in Dogs by Grisha Stewart. BAT is all about helping the dog find alternative behaviors and reactions that produce greater rewards than the problem behavior. It's available on Amazon or from Whole Dog Journal. Hope that's a start for you. Some of the training experts on the forum may have some better suggestions and advice.
