Not remotely surprising coming from Tia (that is NOT a dig, I really admire Tia a lot, just saying that I'm not surprised she's supporting that legislation.)

Did anyone else catch that DNA testing must be done on the dogs per this new ordinance at the expense of the owners?

Did anyone else catch that DNA testing must be done on the dogs per this new ordinance at the expense of the owners? I did notice that.... I wonder, what exactly do they determine is a Pit Bull if no DNA test accurately can test for an APBT...? Or are they going to lump several breeds into the category?

^ So since the dog can't come back as a pit bull(some will come back AST- but not all pits show up as AST) does that mean that the people are off the hook?

I have no idea what they are planning on doing, or how they are doing this. Bet they include SBT and AST, and maybe require dogs that "look" like "pit bulls" to be DNA tested. Dogs that don't come back one of the "pit bull breeds" will be exempt. Curious to see how this plays out and how DNA testing is included in more legistlation in the future.

Sure they will include SBT and AST...probably American Bulldog too! Even if they require dogs that look like "pit bulls" to be included they are going to have to make it a big net. Harley and Sedona did not come up with AmStaff or SBT...pretty sure they are both APBTs. Very curious indeed.

She still doesn't understand why people are upset and is blaming SwayLove. No. People are mad at YOU because of what YOU said!!! And what happens for dogs like Saxon, who did come back as SBT in the DNA test? I would have to pay for extra liability insurance to keep my SERVICE DOG!? Not everyone can afford that, and even though I am a responsible owner, I would not be able to afford extra insurance to keep my dog!

This is especially sucks for the 22% of Westwego citizens who live below the poverty line. DNA tests aint cheap!

And what is going to happen to those dog? Or the dogs in shelters that no one wants to adopt because they can't afford the extra insurance? How do people not understand why this is such a bad idea?

That is one of the things that always unnerved me about all the DNA stuff. Works great to disprove all the mis-identified dogs but what about those of us who have real AmStaffs, SBT or APBTs.

The thing that bothers me the most about this whole thing is that this is not just about insurance. There are a whole slew of restrictions in the proposal that are going to cause people to either give up or lose their dogs and they are making it about insurance. This is not "better than a ban" is a ban with some lipstick slapped on it.
I'm less worried about the cost of DNA than the cost of the confinement requirements and the ability to obtain any kind of insurance with a targeted dog.
I've even read stuff from people saying they won't really enforce it, totally ignoring the fact that Councilman Green plans on using his discretionary fund to have this "strictly enforced." (his exact words)
And then they snap at Sway to "do your research" when they have no clue what is in the proposal, what is going on down there at all, but they think they do because VRC posted an ad about insurance.
Cripes.

Because that's the way Tia made it sound in her pout post with the picture of the cute dog. It's really sad how few people seem to comprehend how big of a deal her endorsement is. Really upsetting.

Oh the DNA % is 50 to be a targeted dog but they haven't specified what exactly they will be testing for.

I'm in the same state as Westwego and the majority of people there are not going to be able to afford this.
To be honest, I wish the money used trying to pass this bill would just be spent EDUCATING people down here. Pit bulls are very popular here and there are a ton of backyard breeder. A lot of people here want pit bulls as "status" dogs and some breeders are cross breeding to get huge dogs. I've had people at work ask me for the highest protein food to make their dog massive or what supplement they can give their dog to make him massive.
The majority of the pit bulls I see out in public are not neutered and I've seen people bringing nursing mothers or pregnant dogs out to the pet stores so people will ask about the puppies and they can show them the mother because she's there

It sounds like there's a real lack of dog owner supoort in that area. Regulations will under push them further underground, without chnaging any behaviors. Are there any groups in Westwego that work on community outreach with exisiting dpg owners and breeders?
