This will be short as I am exhausted after a super busy day but I wanted to share this. My issues with RE and the "modified" APBT lines is many factored. Namely, it seems that the folks who breed the wide and lows, as-big-as-you-can-get and so called "freakish" bullies all share BIG price tags. Dave Wilson himself claims fame to the RE "brand" and charges $5,000 for some stud fees. If this is not a money making business, I don't know what is. And anyone who makes money breeding dogs is doing it wrong and for all the wrong reasons. The price is not for quality, it's for status, period.
I feel that we have seen very little of results of these huge dogs. They are flowing into rescues and shelters and their simple presence will land them on the euth table quicker than our true to breed APBTs.
I wonder about genetics, since it seems the focus is size and bulk, not longterm health, skeletal structure, correctness, etc.
The *only* thing okay with this new fad is temperament has been bred down immensely. In my demographic region, the bulky bullies are less desired than the gamebred APBTs and APBTs of correct size, weight, proportion and temp.
I'll be surprised if I see an "American Bully" at a healthy age over 4 or 5 years. They are so compromised structurally. As we all know, the larger the breed the shorter lifespan usually. This is what we'll likely see. Lack of stamina, endurance and energy.
I love conformation showing, can appreciate a well-bred physical (and otherwise) representation of any breed but I feel it's gotten out of hand and away from what breeds were originally bred for.
tinyurl.com/6399az (Pedi-greed, a bit of overkill, IMO)
