Next month on Feb 16 I am doing a training lecture at my Library. I have been asked to do it since people in the community have been impressed with Rocky and his behavior. I am not sure I am able to share how I achieved this. I only took a few classes. Never took a basic clicker class jumped right to a bit more advanced and never really learned proper clicker skills. I just ordered two books Paul Owens the Dog whisperer. After reading an article on the real dog whisperer I was intrigued. the books look interesting I hope I will be able to use it to come up with a plan for the lecture. My goal in this lecture is to have a better community of people with dogs and politeness. (do you get what I mean?) Imagine a community of dogs that are CGC ready. Got to start some where. But with positive methods. I ordered the first two books listed here www.raisewithpraise.com/Books.htmand I have the dvd on order to check out from library system. I also hope to get the cesar books off the shelf and some more positive type books which I also have on order from the library system so other library's in the area do have some of these books. but they are few and far in between. Has anyone used the Paul Owens books? I hope I did not waste my money. They were only about 6 bucks each on Amazon plus I have free 2 day shipping so they should be here any day. Please give me any reference to good material for a starter lecture. I will cover basic how to use a clicker. common problems and house manners. Thanks everyone. And anyone local is welcome to come help out. Thanks again.

I think your own experience is perfect for this type of thing. You're not a trained expert. You didn't have tons of experience. You're just a normal dog owner. What you did was educate yourself and work consistently with Rocky. I think that simple message of "you really can do this with your dog" will resonate with people.

Agree with Suzi. Maybe the way to approach the lecture is hey I am not a professional trainer but this is what works with my dog and what we did. Maybe then you can talk about the benefits of positive training and clicker training principles and how it works instead of having to worry about actually teaching clicker training.

Yeah I dont want to teach clicker training I just want to show how it worked for me. ALso I plan to start by telling my experience and how I ended up doing positive training after a bad experience with a negative training situation. How one little yank of the collar made for such an issue that later positive methods changed our life. I would have a different dog today that actually if I continued on the road we started with I might not have this dog today. Do you think I can say where I went for those classes. It is a local program and was real cheap because I adopted from a shelter I got 50% off. I thought this guy was good he had a way with the dogs much like Cesar. I cant even believe I fell for that. Went to basic then to adv basic. Rocky was already such a good dog so he never had to be "choked" and when I was told to do it when he forged ahead in a heal I never did. Long story short when the man came to pet Rocky for "examination" rocky jumped on him. The guy grabbbed Rockys collar and yelled off. Rocky reacted by snapping at him. BTW Rocky was less than 6 months old. This resulted in Rocky being lifted off the ground and shaken and being told "YOU DONT DO THAT". Now I had seen this guy doing it to other unruly dogs, I did not care for it but they seemed to need discipline but when I watched him do it to ROcky it was hurtful. I sat in my car on the way out thinking I think that man just taught my little pup that petting is a bad thing. I came on to a forum and posted this. Maryellen advised me to never go back and find a new trainer. I already had issues with Rocky not liking his collar grabbed and now if I tried to grab his collar to get a hole of him he was snapping at me. This is when i found mary's website and asked her the question. Maryellen referred me to a trainer who was doing clicker which I cared less about but liked her positive style. It changed our lives.

I don’t think it is necessary to give the trainer’s name but rather you can use that experience and the way that particular individual trained as a potential segue into using positive training vs. using aversive methods.

Well obviously it would be someone local. ANd some can figure it out on there own. Some people know when I tell the story who they think it is. I would like to give references but so far I know of no one in this area. So what should I tell people to look for. What I did after my bad experience was to sit in on a class to see if I liked what was going on. I saw no collar yanking what I saw was Puppies being allowed to get all riled up and tugging and playing and then when when the enough and sit command were given little puppies sat and then there was a click and a party. I had just come from a class where tugging on toys was a no no. doing so would be teaching him a bad thing to be aggressive and then might result in a recent incident that happened at the time where a little girl was chocked to death when her golden played tug with her scarf. That is when I had a light bulb moment. Ah teach dog it is fun to play and it is even better to stop playing when told I get lots of yummy stuff which to me is better than that tug. That's how it all started.

Oh ANd I think I want to discuss the dominance myth. Where can I find good way to explain that. Oh just found this maybe some of this is good. Huh its Paul Owens again www.raisewithpraise.com/faq/dominance_myth.htm Well I guess I will be referencing his work mostly. I dont want to look like a commercial for the original Dog whisperer.

Our favorite trainer is probably closer to you than us in Hewitt NJ and Warwick NY. Dory Kowal runs the Doggy Clubhouse and does positive training "Teaching owners to live up to their dog's expectations!". acadogtraining.com/about.html The Paul Owens book is excellent.

I actually have heard of Dory, I was going to take therapy test through her program but found an earlier date with out having to take a class some where else. I should drop by her place and see her giving a class so I know if I can confidently refer people to her. Thanks dave for reminding me about her. SHe is between Hewitt and Warwick right. Up by upper Greenwood Lake?
