Quick update on Barley... He had been doing better on the steroids. Brook stayed home with him last week while I was in California at my brother's wedding. He seemed to be doing well this week, until Thursday. He started getting more wobbly and unsteady, started falling more often. It's been bad since then. He's having a lot more falling spells, and short periods where he is not able to stand at all, usually after having been napping or lying down for a while. His legs are much weaker. But then he's able to walk and even trot pretty quickly. When he falls, it's not like he trips, but he sways a little and then completely falls to the side or falls forward like he has absolutely no control over his body. A couple times he has urinated after doing this without being able to move out of the way. His neck often gets caught to the side or under him when this happens as well. There are no spasms or jerky movements when he falls, like you would see with epilepsy. It's all very scary. We have an appointment with a veterinary neurologist on Tuesday, the soonest they could see him. We wanted to take him down to the University of Illinois' vet teaching school, but their neurological specialist just left for University of Wisconsin. This one we're seeing is at a VCA hospital, and normally I'm pretty skeptical of VCAs. But I read up on her and she seems to have a very good reputation. Please keep your fingers and paws crossed for Barley. I just want to get this figured out and fixed.

Thanks everyone. I was very happy with the VCA hospital and with the neurologist. She was very thorough and didn't try to rush through anything. They did ultrasound and more xrays, and if those don't show anything then he goes back in the morning for a head and neck MRI and a spinal tap. Her top suspects are meningitis (which may or may not show up in bloodwork, depending on the type), tumor in head or neck, and possibly cervical disc problem (which she really doesn't think is the issue). I'm realllly hoping it's meningitis and not a tumor.

I'm so sorry, I hope it's something easy to treat. I'll be keeping you both in my thoughts. Waiting is always the most difficult part.

He has a tumor in the center of his brain and they can't remove it surgically. Radiation is an option, but even if he responds well he would only have another 9 months. Without radiation he has a couple months at most. We're in the process of getting more details. I'm devastated. Having just lost Nine and Kuma this summer, I can't believe this is happening. I'm in shock.
